[Crawl 4.0.0 B26] Stuck in the orc mines

I went back to playing an older version of crawl and find myself stuck
in a portion of the orcish mines between levels 3 and 4. Dunno how
this happened by I can only go up and down between those two levels,
no other stairs. No sources of teleportation or anything!

Even worse than being abyssed early on I reckon.

Aside from abandonining and loading a less buggy version of crawl, any
suggestions for a way out? I had a quick look at the save file
structure in a hex editor but couldn't find anything sensible to
change. (One effort of changing a 04 to a 03 left me with lots of
skills at level 255 which might have been interesting if I wasn't
still stuck at the time!)

You probably used brown stairs. Or teleported. Since stone soup 0.3, the
game is less cruel, but what you experienced is in fact by design. And
it's still possible to get trapped in the Mines or the Lair, though less
likely.

But completely avoidable.

Better luck next time, and remember to bring a means of digging or
teleportation.
