I just started the COH Europe updater and read about a "costume exploit".
What's this? Anybody using it is apparently able to get costume pieces which
shouldn't be available. Does anybody know about this and can explain? They
say using it can lead to character corruption but WTF, I have enough of
those.

Well, ultimately the bottom line comes not down to the costumes,
character creation types, and Supergroup Base access, but to the bottom line
of money & time.
The NC-SOFT & CRYPTIC STUDIOS folks have bills to pay.
We, the playerbase, enjoy new content and fun entertainment.
Expansion packs are a curse and a blessing for both interested parties.
New content can be added; and selling the expansion packs pays for new
development and other necessary maintenance fees which are sometimes
non-obvious.
THE PROBLEM --- The playerbase likes to keep their money and if push
comes to shove will continue playing the original game until being forced to
purchase the expansion packs for in-game denial of services to players who
do purchase the expansion packs.
Okay. Now the subtle factors in play...
Firstly, the COH & COV game boxes have had a few DELUXE editions with
in-game show-off perks not available to the STANDARD EDITION boxes.
Secondly, those DELUXE "perks" cost more money than the STANDARD EDITION
boxes.
Thirdly, what is the point of paying out more cash for DELUXE "perks" if
they can be accessed completely via an undocumented (but easily
discoverable) "/cov " slashy command?
If the COH & COV game divergences are merged for all customers in ISSUE
#7 then there might be a few folks angry and feeling "Ripped off" (although
standard practice is that pretty much all online game Expansion Packs are
merged into the existing updated codebase after a 6-month to 12-month period
once the Expansion Pack proves itself a sales dud or sales stud). Now the
problem with that is that frugal shoppers might wait out the expansion and
prevent needed maintenance revenue. Although I will state here that NC-SOFT
smartly diverges from the current online gaming pack by not gutting the
development team after the game has sold enough copies to balance out the
creation & advertising budget costs (pointing finger at SONY and you can
guess which middle finger it is).
Now morally, it is just more imaginary loot for imaginary characters in
the end. A mountain of imaginary gold will still be worth less than a fart
in a real world that recognizes that a sold character account is less
valueable because the current location in the journey is not the journey
itself. No harm, no foul.
The smart thing is either make the command official and debug it --
OR -- Merge the existing costumebase making it available to all -- OR --
Reset characters with wrong-alignment costume codes default each
non-alignment part to the first costume slot default for that correct
alignment -- OR -- Refund the extra-balance of the money spent for the
DELUXE editions in subscription discount time (a free month).
And remember folks, that although this will not break the bank for
NC-SOFT or CRYPTIC STUDIOS the fundamental bottom line is...
The NC-SOFT & CRYPTIC STUDIOS folks have bills to pay.
If they cannot pay those bills, then we don't get a game to play
anymore. >> Stay informed about: Costume exploit - WTF? |

Funny how people get so hyped about adding a few pixels to their
characters risking corrupting and losing the character.
I have about 18 characters (although I only play like 4 of them
nowadays), yet none of them have changed their appearance since the day
I created them nor have they used the extra 'Icon' slots.
I guess it comes from me playing in 1st person view so what use in
changing something I don't see? >> Stay informed about: Costume exploit - WTF? |

I got that reliably on a "destroy hero statues" mission in CoV. It would
mapserver for a moment at the entry. It appeared that this was caused by
a delay in loading (in this case, a delay in loading the object for the
truck that you spawn from).
It's not connected to the "/cov" command.

The costume options themselves probably won't corrupt your character -
some people have ALREADY gotten those options through oopses in Icon not
connected to the debug "/cov" command.
However, the debug command also does some other things behind the
scenes, as you can tell from the fact that the BGM, zone screens, menu
colors, etc all change. You can enter the villain elevators in Pocket D,
for example, as well, or access the villain stores in PvP zones.
However, there are soft checks in the game (like the elevators) that the
"/cov" command seems to affect, and hard checks (like the actual gates
to opposite-faction zones) that it doesn't.
And that's the problem - for example, apparently there's a hard check
that prevents trading infamy for influence and vice versa. If you're
using the "/cov" command and do a trade with someone of your faction,
the game will apparently hit this hard check, go "oh no you don't" and
ZERO OUT YOUR INFLUENCE COUNTER in some situations.
From this it's fairly easy to extrapolate that what you're doing with
the "/cov" command is stripping off the layer of "soft" checks from the
game, essentially taking all the safeties off. If you hit the wrong hard
check, one can easily picture the game resolving the problem by simply
blocking out your character permanently.
If you just use the "/cov" command to make a new costume and then
promptly set the flag back (and probably log off for good measure)
you're probably safe - but you're definitely taking things into your own
hands, and if anything screws up, well, now that you've been explicitly
informed by the game not to use it, you're not likely to get any
support.

The only problem I've had is that the enemies in the first room or two of
most missions are invisible. This gave my MM a bit of debt when she engaged
two Longbow agents in a plant-bombs mission--while unable to see the four
invisible Luddites (including two healers) that were also there.
It's been consistent since about I4.

So that's what happens if one too many people fail "The Devouring Earth

It has happened to me half a dozen times. My laptop's graphics chipset
is (alas) ATI. It was never a big deal, though, as exiting and
re-entering the mission always fixed the problem.

This weird stuff usually caused by an overheating graphics chip.
Can you check?

It disappeared for a while around I5 or I6, but didn't stay gone. My
mistermind has no trouble with it. She simply aims through one of her bots.
It's strange to be fighting nothing with no combat fx unless somebody
misses.
Characters with stealth or super-speed often kick it in and run around
looking for someone they can see.
Alternately, exiting the mission and coming back in after first contact
usually does the trick and that wasn't the way it used to be. Used to be
nothing helped except getting a teammate, which reset everything.
