Thought I'd post this stand-alone. I just installed a
120 mm quiet fan in the side door of my new Antec
900 case. That fan blows directly on the video card
from about 3 inches away. I was in Gothic 3 for about
an hour, and exited and immediately checked the
GPU temp ...... 70 degrees C .... down from about
81 ingame without the side fan. Frankly, I'm stunned.
And that is with the stock cooler on the card.
I have the fan blowing into the case, and I also
have both slot covers on either side of the video
card removed. I can feel a steady stream of air
coming out through those two open slots.

Anybody want to buy a Zalman VF900 cheap ?
I suppose I will get around to installing that thing
some day. No rush, it seems.

Hmm... still with the 'old' BIOS ??

Just installing V1.01 of the new eVGA BIOS on my 675MHz factory
overclocked 8800GT lowered the very worst-case maximum core
temperature to 80 degrees C with (auto) fan speed ~ 55%. Inaudible
compared to the other (all slow-speed) fans in my case. No
case-hacking required.

Nice to know that you have all this time for futzing around.

BTW, 'commercial-grade' modern silicon has no problem with
temperatures around 80 degrees core. And the timing-design of the
nVidia parts assumes 110-120 degrees for worst-case timing margins.
( Signal propagation in silicon devices slows rapidly with increasing
temperature) However, 100degrees C and above is distinctly not
recommended for long-life.

Figured it wasn't your cards cooling that was the issue.
Even without the side fan on my Antec 900, my card is 51 degrees at
idle and 75 after an hour of gaming.

I started at over 100 degrees when the card was
newly installed in my Antec SLK1650B case .. which
is very small and crammed with too much gear. Still,
in that case my BFG 7900 GTO was very cool using
a Zalman VF900 cooler. It was in the 30s to 40s.
Finding the bad BFG thermal compound and replacing
it with Artic Silver dropped me into the low 90s on the
8800. Moving to the new Antec 900 case dropped me
into the mid 80s. Removing the slot covers dropped
me to the low 80s. But this time I got a huge drop
with the side fan. And yet the box it totally silent.
I cannot hear a single fan ... except maybe the GPU
fan very slightly. And at 70 ingame, the GPU fan
never comes up now. Looks like the problem is
solved. Also, I called BFG again about the BIOS
upgrade. He had me read off the BIOS version at the
startup screen, and said, "Yep. You already have
the upgrade installed." He told me that several weeks
ago, and at that time recommended moving to a
better case for cooling. Amazing ... a BFG tech
who knows what he is talking about. Just amazing.

I bet you are running your fans at mid or top speed.
I can't stand fan noise, and I had all of my fans on
low speed ... and now even the side fan is on low
speed, but it is so close to the video card that
it works. Loudest noise on this machine is the hard
drive seeking. I can live with that Smile

Nah. Its set to auto, and runs at around 30%.
