Hi variant designers,
I always felt some of the V object types were named a bit lamely and
with too much D&D influence - like Metal Lamellar Armour, Lucerne
Hammer, Large Wooden Shield.
I have just gone through the object file and changed some names. Here
are some of the new ones:
Leather Cuirass
Wolfskin
Lacquered Leather
Habergeon
Mail-coat
Cuirass
Knightly Plate Armour (was Mithril)
Kingly Plate Armour (was Adamantite)
Kite Shield
Tower Shield
Table Knife (was Broken Dagger)
Dirk
Greatsword
Fell Blade (was Executioner's Sword)
War Axe
Berserker Axe
Great Spiked Flail
War Helm
Great Helm
Elven Arrow (was Mithril)
Pair of Shoes (was Light Leather Boots)
Any other designers have done this? Good ideas...?

I kept the originals and added new ones.
Good ideas...?
Sure, I would also check wikipedia or other resources for the weight
of those weapons.

Having more variety is good. However, mithril is originally Tolkien,
not D&D, so I'd keep the mithril armor. Elven arrows sounds neater,
IMO.

Yes there seems to be a bit of a consensus on this...

Please remember to reduce the AC for cuirasses compared to what they're
replacing. Unlike proper armors, cuirasses don't have arm/leg protection at
all.
> Cuirass
Easier to visualize the AC reduction here; think conquistadors vs. plate-armored
knights.
> Knightly Plate Armour (was Mithril)
Tolkein is a formative influence on D&D. Mithril is a big import.
This substitution needs a large increase in weight, and elimination of acid
immunity.
> Kingly Plate Armour (was Adamantite)
This substitution also needs a large increase in weight, and elimination of acid
immunity. Adamantite is an D&Dism, but it can be visualized as a "hypersteel"
-- it's at an absurd point in the weight/rigidity spectrum.
> Elven Arrow (was Mithril)
Cf. Unangband: racial equipment.
> Pair of Shoes (was Light Leather Boots)
Please reduce AC. [I'm not clear whether these should be AC1 or AC0.] Also, I
can't think of a good backstory excuse for this substitution. >> Stay informed about: Cooler weapon and armor names |

Lucerne hammer is real name for real weapon, it isn't D&D:ism. But it
isn't quite "priesty" weapon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucerne_hammer
Those "lame" names are quite informative. Other names don't tell you
what the item really is.

"Royal Plate Armour"?

Actually, it predated D&D. To quote my Oxford Dictionary - Adamantine
from Greek adamos - very hard metal or stone.
If you wiki it there are references in Norse mythology, The Faerie Queene,
Tolkein, and the King James Bible, plus the 1813 Websters dictionary.

It's a game, whatever you do should make it more fun! Personally, my favorite
weapons and armor in *bands are the "cool" ones that have interesting names
and/or properties (they don't necessarily need to be especially good or
magical):
Storm hammers, Blades of Chaos, Gnomish Picks, Falcon Swords,
Mithril/Adamantite Plate, Shadow Cloaks, etc.
Executioner's Sword and Fell Blade are both cool, if I were in your shoes I'd
include them both ^ ^
So on the whole I agree with you (although I do not agree with every single
change). How far is too far, that's your call. (Like, maybe you don't want
people finding ultra doomsabers on level 1. or maybe you do.) >> Stay informed about: Cooler weapon and armor names |

Both Kingly and Royal Plate makes me think of armor made for show
rather than real use, like gold-plated or with really fancy designs. >> Stay informed about: Cooler weapon and armor names |

"Kingly Plate Armor" elicits Maximillian plate armor, to my mind. >> Stay informed about: Cooler weapon and armor names |

I followed this link and a further link to see some pictures and
examples, and I think there's a very good case to be made for moving
it to the "polearms" category, even in Vanilla.
I agree with what has already been said on the subject of Adamantite
pre-dating D&D. IIRC, this has the same root as the adjective
"adamant" meaning stubborn or unyielding (i may be wrong though as I
don't have my dictionary in front of me). I believe Adamant used to
serve as the noun, too, but this is a pretty archaic usage nowadays.

Adamantine plte armour is very heavy, so changing it to royal and
imagining just what you imagined is approriate. Gold is heavy. Really
heavy. But also quite soft, so in order to support it it has to have
steel too. It can't rust, it is made for royal person. Because all of
those monsters it should also protect well.

Why? The existing weights in Angband aren't accurate.

In a Middle-Earth context, I think I'd want to call that Numenorean
Plate Armor. They'd have had the military mindset and advanced
technology to do it. The Noldor might have also made armor equivalent to
Maximillian plate.
