Took me a while to get used to newer controls too. Trick might be to keep
the camera behind Lara.
Using a mouse or trackball to gently steer Lara right or left (while
pressing "W" on keyboard) seemed to work the best. (The "A" or "D" keys for
left and right seemed to make her pivot took quickly imo.)
Camera angle can be a pain. You've probably noticed that when Lara openes a
door and enters a new room the camera is facing her. So pressing "W"
(forward) will make her pivot around and run back into the door! Ooooff!
If camera is facing Lara you'll have to use the "S" key (which is reverse)
to get her to talk forward, or use mouse only to get camera back behind her
for the "W" key.
Cmera's POV is controlled by using mouse without pressing movement keys. No
more look button...
Gamepad is probably personal preference.
I'm playing TRA on a PC & once I got used to the controlls, I'm having no
trouble at all. Whatever is the most comfortable for you. Others here
will be able to tell you more about gamepads.
Meantime, here's a link for comparison-- keyboard controls -vs- gamepad.

Hope that helps & happy holidays!
(And happy raiding of course)
