Post subject: Controller question for you multiple sim users
Archived from groups: alt>games>microsoft>flight-sim (more info?)

I have a complete set of CH controllers, Fighterstick, pedals and Pro
Throttle that are calibrated using the latest CH Manager and work
correctly with 0 issues in FS9 on all aircraft. The system has FS9 as
its only sim installation.
I've been trying for several years now from time to time to install
CFS2 on the same system and have the controllers function correctly in
that sim as well as my FS9. Each time I try to do this, I calibrate
each controller seperately in the CH manager and calibrate them in
CFS2 as well just like in FS9.
It just doesn't work! I have YET to get the controllers to function
properly in CFS2. They spike and cause jumps and jerks in all of the
CFS2 aircraft. It's as though they are not calibrated at all.
If anyone has these two sims installed and running together on the
same computer, can you possibly advise me on what I might be doing
wrong when setting up CFS2 that's causing my constant controller
issues in that sim.
Keep in mind I don't use the mapping for my controllers. I simply
calibrate them in the CH Manager and assign button assignments in each
simulator.
Any ideas??????
Thanks

Hi Brett;

I think with the CH Manager already installed on the system and used
to calibrate in FS9, in installing CFS2, if I use the CFS2 controller
settings to access controllers, it will default to the CH Manager
instead of the XP applet.

First, assuming XP, go to the Windows control panel and set all controls
to default. Then use the CH Control Manager to do the calibration which
gets the controls calibrated at the system level. You may have to go into
each sim and set the sensitivity and null zones for the controls in the
sim.

It's been a long time since I used my CH Joystick in CFS2 but it worked
fine then - the problem was me <G>. I have CFS2 and would install it
but at this point it will be much later this week as I have to beat
Vista into submission. I'll ask Bob what he thinks.

When I used my CH controllers with those older sims (CFS2 plus others) I
always used it in fully mapped mode, making templates which used keystroke
inputs to do everything apart from the main axis and hatswitch, I think.
Had to fly with the Num Lock turned off generally. Of course you then have
to make sure that there are no button assignments made in the sim itself.

Hey, even I'm confused by that! But I am getting pretty old now Smile

That was it Brett; CFS2 was accessing the Windows applet to calibrate
the controllers. Having them calibrated in the CH Manager in FS9 was
causing a driver conflict; thus the controller spiking. Forced the
calibration in the CH Manager with button assignments in CFS2 for that
sim solved the issues.
Thanks much as always

If you tell XP to go to default settings (and then never go back) and
use the CH Manager calibration that does the overall calibration of the
units so you get the proper signals for the controller travel. That's
the calibration - full back gives some value (say 0), full forward gives
another (say 255). Each sim may interpret them differently (say FSX is
more sensitive for the pitch than CFS2) so you can use the Sim null zone
and sensitivity settings to tweak the responses but calibration is
applied so that it's the same in all sims. That is one position gives 0,
the other gives 255 (the values are made up) and in between you get
something from 0 to 255.
