So just to be clear the exact problem:

The computer worked fine with the new card, several time it woke up
properly out of energy saving mode but after four or five hours it
didn't anymore.

Since then the monitor gives the message that it doesn't get any signal
and you should check the cable. The computer seems to start up normally
except there is no image.

Things we tried:
* different monitor and cable
* put old video card back
* checked if card was inserted properly

Things I think could be the reason
* motherboard
* plug not put in properly? (though it had the same problem before
opening up the case, so I think this is unlikely)
* power supply? (computer seems to start up normally except for video
card feed)

If anyone has any suggestions they're welcome.

TIA
*Bianca (not looking forward to working tomorrow)

If you're leaving it that long, why don't you just turn it off? I do -
saves energy.

Best wishes

Do you have Vista? There is a problem (wonderful world of Windows), and I
have linked you to a few sites where people are complaining and hopefully
you can find a fix.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.html
is a tutorial of sleep problems and wake problems.

Vista seems to not want to wake up. If you have a keyboard with the sleep
symbol restart your computer and try that. For some reason your computer
just won't wake. It is the monitor not the video card, any monitor, they
just won't wake. If the above doesn't work, shut down your computer and
unhook it from the power outlet for a few minutes then plug it back in and
start it, it may or may not fix it.

I just shut mine down.

It is used regularly in those 4-5 hours, it is set to turn off to energy
saving mode after 5 minutes. It worked fine, waking up as it should, it
just stopped working.

I have the opposite problem with Vista: the sleep option is useless. I shut
it down too that way it stays shut off.

That computer doesn't have Vista, plus it now refuses to start up.

Maxon: Vista has a problem with the sleep option if you use the
screensaver where you can use your own images and photos. It leaves an
audio channel open and that causes it not to go to sleep. Don't know if
that is causing your problem, it did on my own computer.

A small update:

My father has put in a new PSU and it still isn't working, so it's
probably the motherboard. I don't know if he wants to take the trouble
of getting a new one, since they are hard to come by.

My mother saw an advertisement for a Packard Bell for just over €350.
Personally I'm not too fond of pc's put together by major brands, they
often use their own type of hardware, making it hard to replace or
upgrade something. From the description I make out it has a shared
videocard (Nvidia 7050) but it has enough ram (2gb) for my father's
use, but I can't find it listed on the website of PB, though knowing
that shop they could have imported it from Germany or have it made
especially.

I'll see if I can put a system together for about the same price for
them.

No that's not it - thanks for the answer though. The sleep mode is useless.
I just turn it off anyway - saves power.
