My friend and I spent many hours playing Commandos 2 in multiplayer
mode. While drinking a glass of beer we were thinking about, how to kill
the next soldiers. Sometimes the evenings were really long...
After having played every map several time using different tactics, we
awaited Commandos 3. But it was a great disapointment, especially the
multiplayer part. Again we started playing Comandos 2. But now, there is
a real alternative:
> Soldiers: Heroes of World War II
It has a cooperative multiplayer mode which really works like it should.
You have a couple of soldiers and vehicles under control, which can be
exchanged with Your team mate during the game. However, items can not be
exchanged directly. They must be removed from the backpack and put to
the ground, then the team mate's unit can pick it again.
The game is in 3D, the screen can be rotated and zoomed. Despite of the
3D engine, there are a lot of details in the maps. The environment (like
trees, buildings, bushes

can be destroyed. Buildings can be entered,
but they are not as detailed as in Commandos 2. They are basically used
as hiding place. Weapons and ammo can be taken from dead enemys, but the
bodys can't be removed. However, if a tank rolls over them, only a peace
of red soil wil remain
There is a lot of micromanagement needed, as in the commandos series.
One big difference is, that each unit can be controlled directly or
indirectly. Directly means, that You must use the arrow keys in order to
move the unit and the mouse to shoot. In indirect mode (default) the
unit acts like in common RTS games, just a klick on the destination
position and the unit will go there and shoot if necessary (if You
allowed it to do so).
Another big difference to the commandos series (somehow a disadvantage):
there is no sight indicator of the enemies. This means, save often, save
early!
Last but not least, there is a map editor and there will be maps and
mods designed from the community. This is the most important lack of the
commandos series!
