Archived from groups: alt>games>coh (more info?)

Hello. As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm coming back from a year or so break. I
guess I've got plenty of update notes to read, but if anyone would care to
take the time to touch on some of the more notable changes in the past year
or so, I'd appreciate it.

Also, since none of my heroes made it past their teens, I'm open to
starting on a new server. I'd like to know what servers would best
accommodate a low-level player in the Eastern/Central area of the US. RP
servers sound interesting as well.

I just picked up the collectors edition of CoV at lunch. From what I've
read, installing CoV is the best way to get both CoH/CoV installed.

Are there many people still playing CoH?

Are there healthy low-level populations on any of the servers? Having been
away so long and not having attained that high a level in the first place,
I'm going to be little better than a somewhat-educated noob. Razz

Also, what am I in for if my existing characters' names have been taken, as
I assume they were flagged as unreserved some time back?

Thanks. I'll probably have more ?'s later.

Nothing that really affects your old heroes since you never got past
lvl 22

Many of us are in Virtue, the unofficial RP server. Add @prof_chaos to
your global friends and send me a tell whenever you want Smile

When you activate the account, select 'Upgrade account', that will add
the CoV to your old CoH account and give you 4 extra character slots
per server.

Yes and no.
Up to yesterday there were many, as people like me that reached 40 in
CoV may have been back playing in CoH, but since I7 starts today, most
of them will be back to CoV.

Well like I said, all servers (but pick Virtue!) will have lots of
starting characters in CoV since there are several new archetypes to
play, so you're back in a good time to start.

If the names were 'common' then chances are they're taken. Not sure
what will happen, probably some generic name and you'll have to
/petition or something.

Today is a good and bad day so expect anything, good because I7 is live
and many people will be there, but bad because, you know how patch days
are... usually buggy and with servers coming up and down, regardless
of patch and regardless of game Smile

Can't help you there, as I've only been playing for about six months.

I recommend Triumph; it was the first server on which I played, and it
is still my favorite. Triumph's population is extremely friendly, and I
encounter plenty of casual and relaxed players.

Yup. Both games run on the exact same engine. Be sure you UPGRADE your
existing CoH account, though-- that way you'll have access to your old
characters as well as your new ones.

> Are there many people still playing CoH?

Paragon City is still pretty active, yeah.

I have characters on several servers, and from what I can tell they all
have a very solid low-level population. I have heard occasional
complaints about the difficulty of finding teams past level 30, but I've
never had significant difficulties. (And my preferred servers are not
particularly populous.)

Previously, names belonging to inactive characters below level 35 (I
think) were flagged as available, but that policy has recently been
changed. Names are now reserved indefinitely, for all characters,
regardless of level.
If you had a character named "Potato Salad Man" and somebody grabbed it
BEFORE the policy change, you'll have a chance to rename him when you
log on. If nobody else grabbed the name, it's safe now, and yours pretty
much forever.
