I enjoy watching the screenshots in alt.binaries.flightsims.screenshots.
What I don't understand yet is why I'm having no trouble opening the files
posted by "notspecified" but no way I can open those of SORSRR. I'm using
OE6 and Usenet.

Hi Loek,
Those files are encoded using an encoding routine called yEnc (y-Encoding).
This is a method to compress image files so that they can be uploaded in
multiple parts, and they don't take up as much disk space. You need a
newsreader that will decode yEnc files, or a stand-alone program that will
decode them. Personally, I just don't bother with yEnc files. But many
people who upload to binary newsgroups do. If you want to decode yEnc files,
try searching Google for "yEnc decoders".

Thanks Randy,

Something else again to check out. I've seen those yEnc files before, but
never bothered. But now I just need to see those screenshots of SORSRR!!
Getting too bloody curious!

Besides the decoders and paysites newsgroups Outlook express will do it for
you.

Highlight all the parts right click the mouse on anyone of the highlited
parts and click combine.

I'm using Mozilla's freebie Thunderbird. This is open-source, I think.

The only problem I have with it (and the reason for a cautious
recommendation only) is that it does not seem to have a
combine-and-decode function. Well, I haven't found it, anyway, and I
don't have the nouse to write the necessary code so that it combines all
image files intuitively.

Would certainly appreciate a heads-up on that, if anyone knows.

I use Newswatcher on my old Macintosh (MacOS 9.+). A superb newsgroup
browser, and free.

I have the same problem with either OE6 or WIndows Live Mail but only with
SORSRR'S files. All others decode properly.

Windows Outlook Express, or Windows Live Mail, or even Internet Explorer
will combine the files but it won't decode yEnc encoded files unless you
have installed a yEnc plug-in to do that. Do a Google search for "yEnc
decoders".

Hi TeeRee,

I have OE6 and I do use the right klick. But then... re-read the message
below. Try and see if you have the same problem opening SORSRR's
combined/decoded messages, while those from norspecified combine and decode
with no problem at all.

I have no problems with either SORSRR's or those sent by notspecified.

Both just come right up when I click to combine.

Thanks TeeRee,

I'll go ahead and play around with what I found on the net so far.
