Hi,

Review : http://www.gamesquad.com/index.php?option=com_articles&id=8&pform=&aid=179

Perhaps the review which most closely matches my view of the game so
I'm not going to comment on it Smile

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Here's a mirror image of that review:

.....the developer's chose a hypothetical Syria for the setting and
that was perfect! Beats WWI, WWII and all the others rolled into one.

....I love that the new Quick Battle generator doesn't make a new,
random map. I hated that feature in the original games and so I like
how it's hamstringed.

....Dug the new RTS mode, made me feel at home. Great addition!

....I jumped right into a game and found that the graphics were the
most realistic looking things since '77's "Star Wars". Freaking
amazing.

....This has the best GUI in any game evahhhhhh. And the panning/
scrolling for the camera was smooth and easy to use! Glad that they
did away with that spacebar info screen thingie too. That was a waste
of time.

....In this new CM, the command lines plow right through the lay of the
land which is brilliant. In the old one, they followed the lay of the
land. Can't even get a straight command line in that old game. And
it's cool now that you can't adjust the waypoints. Instead I get to
delete the whole thing and start over.

....Pathfinding. Now that is some good stuff. Love that Strykers do
indian tribal dances out in front of the OpFor. Brilliant - and
entertaining! That's how you approach the enemy lines my friend!

....There's lots of game killers in this one and they make the CMSF
experience more than a little annoying. Great way to waste your
Saturday afternoon!

....This game is quirky and it definitely took one step forward AND one
step backwards from the original series. I think there's a game in
there folks!

Final Rating: 3

So I take it you found the review not harsh enough ?

The final score doesn't match his review. What he wrote was right on
- he's bashing the snot out of the thing, and then he gives it a 7.
Hence, the 3 in my review of praise. Smile

Ah, ok, I completely missed the score Smile

Hm indeed, but given that their absolute bottom score when doing a
review is a "6" ...

http://www.gamesquad.com/index.php?option=com_articles&id=8

Incidentally - I used to look a lot at scores, but over the years I've
come around to Jim Zabek's pov which is that they refuse to give
scores, but instead "force" you to read the review and get a more
accurate picture.

Is it a "7" because the game is excellent, but there are too many bugs
- or is it a "7" because of stinkin' gameplay, but rock-solid code ?

The first can be remedied by patches, the latter can't and the only
way to find out is to actually read the review.

Well if 6 is their baseline given the 5 numbers have a weight of 20%
each, then a 7 actually equates to a "4" on a 1-10 scale which more
closely matches the written review. My take away from the review is
that the game play is ok or better than average, but there's too many
bugs preventing it from being excellent. We'll see what future
patches have in store for it I suppose.

There is not a word in the review about human vs. human play.

In counterpoint, though, I do seem to recall other operational-esque
games that couldn't manage this trick that HTTR/COTA makes look so easy.
It was after HTTR appeared, IIRC, that I excoriated the programmers of
FLASHPOINT: GERMANY because the pathfinding there was so incredibly
insane that the AI managed to attack *across its own minefields*.

And in the case of CC:MT, it's just so over-the-top appalling that I
don't think I can muster any "fairness" whatsoever. I'm drawing series
of waypoints *ten meters apart* and my vehicles still can't confidently
*just drive down the road*. I mean, I could understand how sometimes a
fiendishly juxtaposed set of obstacles could engender a stupid-loop, but
vehicles in CC:MT often sit there jitterbugging instead of just driving
down roads.

I bet the reviewer was afraid of being sacked like the one at GameSpot
