I am having difficulty getting colours to display properly in Gargoyle (for
a ZCode game) ... any tips?

The garglk.ini file mentions "Colors for text grid windows", but it only
seems to only apply to styles, not the text/background colours set by the
"@set_colour" ZCode command.

The game I am trying is

As far as I'm aware (and, to be clear, I'm aware of very little)
Gargoyle doesn't support color at all for z-code games. Alas.

Ditto with Hugo. I programmed Pantomime to have a gray background,
which displays as black text on a white background in Gargoyle.

Which is fine, I don't mind. As I get older, my philosophy on colors
in a text game is changing towards something like, "Here is my
recommendation as the author, but feel free to use whatever colors you
want through the menu."

All the zcode games I've seen where black&white in Gargoyle. Isn't it a
colorless implementation of frotz ? There can be colors in glulx game,
though.
For zracer, the only drawback is the red squares are less visible.

Totally agree. My experience of playing "Whom the Telling Changed"
online was completely ruined by not being able to read the frigging text
because it was scrawny little san-serif dark yellow on black.

Different players have different needs.
