I am trying to find some information on hooking up all RGB XY signals
from a color XY game like Star Wars or Black Widow onto a oscilloscope.
I know the procedure is simple with a B&W XY(asteroids) but how would I
go about joining the RGB signals to the scope. From what I am thinking
3 1N4001 would do trick but i could be wrong.
Please Help.....

You only need to provide the scope with "X" and "Y" to produce an image. I
think some scopes have "Z" inputs too but I've never seen one with color
inputs.

You've got the right idea. Use a diode for each color (wired-OR),
but put in a series resistor also (4.7K?), and connect this to the Z
input of the scope. Works just fine.

In article <8OOdnQ2fbpXYtdPZnZ2dnUVZ_tOdnZ2d.TakeThisOut@comcast.com>,

I think that's what he means. Somehow ORing the colors together and
connecting them to the Z input. I would just run all 3 colors to the
same input through, say, a 1K resistor on each color and see how it
looks.

I've worked on color X/Y motherboards with an X/Y 'scope on the bench, and
using the board's X and Y video outputs and ignoring the color outputs will
still let you see all the objects on the 'scope screen just fine. In fact,
chances are you won't even notice the interconnecting vectors that are
normally not visible, as they'll be somewhat fainter than the things you
really want to look at. This is because the average 'scope screen isn't
large enough to see huge detail, as you would on a full-size vector monitor.

I know it can be done, and very easily.

A friend fixed my Tempest board a few years back, and hooked it up to
a scope. After the repair, he determined that the board was repaired
and my monitor still had issues. A Get Well kit took care of that.
He also insisted that a gameboard needs to be tested with a scope
before testing it with a monitor or it could damage the monitor.

That is EXCELLENT advice! A bad op-amp output could cause the electron beam
to "slam" out of bounds on the monitor and possibly damage a channel in the
deflection board.
