Even the programming wizards at Battlefront haven't yet figured out
how to do that Smile

You're just spoilt by the pathfinding in COTA Smile

Any help for a TacAI struggling with the fiendishly difficult task of
successfully driving a truck straight down a road on a sunny day?

Alas some human intelligences sometimes fail on this one.

Here's hoping, though, that the AI programmers weren't channeling my
sister when they wrote the road-and-path-following subroutine.

Never had a problem with that in CCMT - if you'd said a winding road
with rough terrain on both sides, I'd agree with your point as I've
seen it have a tough time with that too, but even then micromanaging
the way points gets it done (as it has in previous versions of CC).
We are looking at that though, but I'm told that the reason this has
only seen some improvement and not an outright overhaul is that it's a
lot trickier to solve with this engine than you'd think.

I see tons of problems with this. Units just jerk back and forth in
place instead of smoothly just turning and driving. And while setting
waypoints *helps*, it's not the certain workaround it should be. Time
and time again, I find myself saying, "Where did my HumVee go?", only to
find it doing the CC hokey-pokey about 10 meters from where it started.

With respect to "winding," I can only observe that if units in CCMT have
a problem with winding roads and fiddly little turns ... why in hell do
the scenarios and maps have so *many* winding roads and fiddly little
turns? I mean, the close intricate terrain looks nice, but it's just
pure frustration watching an AFV back and fill, back and fill, trying to
negotiate a corner.

CC:COI showed some improvements in pathfinding, but CC:MT takes a step
backwards.

Well, FWIW these did have entirely separate development paths. I'm
certain that what comes next will at least have the improvements of
COI in it.
