Post subject: Empire Client with audio feedback?
Archived from groups: rec>games>empire (more info?)

Hello,
I realize this topic might seem a bit of an unusual one, but for some
time lately I've been trying to get my feet wet in Empire blitzes. A
major obstacle for me to accomplish this has been the fact that in the
basic Emp_Client, maps and other data are only presented on demand.
Also, the data is tabulated, which my screen reader has a great deal of
trouble comprehending.
I was wondering, therefore, if anyone had thought up a way to possibly
create a client which would break down the data into a more easily
understood sort of format, and also deal with the problem of a map
that, while certainly useful, is very difficult to comprehend as a
whole simply because you only see little crosssections of it at a time?
The problem mostly is in the fact that my screen reading program is not
designed to read through collumns of data or other similar structures,
at least not with the default Windows console-mode features. It simply
won't track the map very well, I.E. the hex grid is meaningless because
if I press a keystroke to go down one line the cursor automatically
moves to the left collumn, rendering tracking my position impossible.
I realize this is a rather long-winded post, but would appreciate any
advice on this issue anyone could give me.
Thank you,
Zack.

Zack,

Can you explain some how the screen reader works?

I know we have talked about WinACE not working for you but may it can.

Can you read a region or portion of the screen?

On the right side of the WinACE main form is a census panel.
It contains information about only one sector at a time.
You can use the arrow keys to move around on the left side of the
window where the map is, the screen panel on the right will
automatically update to the current sector on the map.
The information on the panel contains information column form but each
field has an individual field in front of the number and the columns
are just for grouping purposes.

The census panel can also show units in a grid format or in text
listing.
The text listing only shows some of the data at this point.

There is also two more areas one the bottom left, for entering commands
and seeing command output and on the bottom right side, it has
information from the server like telegrams and bulletins.

WinACE also has to separate windows, one is basically a command line
interface, the second window is for managing (sending and receiving)
telegrams and announcements.

I think that there maybe some things we could in server to help support
converting information to speech.

I will think of some more possibilities but it will be useful to
understand how you screen reader works.

Ron K.

Certainly. I'll look into the WinACE interface as soon as I've sent
this message.
The screen reader can work typically by allowing me to move the mouse
pointer up and down the window in a more or less linear fashion. That
said, it only reads standard Windows constructs, like a button or other
similar items. Text fields are also understandable. Not having a
sighted individual handy makes it difficult for me to provide very
specific information.
As for specific regions of the screen, that much is usually readable
with an effort. As I say, I'll try the Winace interface and see what I
can come up with.
Yours,
Zack.
