My advise is to go straight for Civ IV. The AI is much better, and they have
done away with the micromanagement that drove you nuts towards the end of a
Civ III game. You can still micromanage if you want to, but you can also
automate your workers and give them quite detailed instructions about what
to do and not to do. In addition, the pollution that kept popping up in Civ
III has mercifully disappeared, together with cities going into riot. Now
there are angry citizens who refuse to work instead, and pollution works in
other ways that don't interefere with the pace of the game. On top of that,
the diplomacy is infinetismally better; now the civs actually remember good
and bad turns other civs have done them, and act accordingly. The downside
of that is that it's very difficult to be friends with everybody; if you are
chummy with a civ that another civ hates, that other civ won't like it. But
that adds to the enjoyment of the game: Which friends to cultivate? And the
resource management is tremendous fun.
