I have a question about "stacked attacks" on a city versus attacking
one-unit-at-a-time.
When I take cities, I always put all of my attacking units in a single
square and then attack all of them at once in a stack. This seems to
work very well for me.
But can I accomplish the same thing by just attacking the city one unit
at a time from the stack, or from separate locations around the city?
For example, Cyrus has a city filled with about 25 units of various
types. I have about 30 tanks positioned around the city in groups of
say 4 or 5 each. I have knocked down the city unit defenses with my
planes, and city defenses as well.
Now, if I hit the city with one tank at a time, will all of the units
in the city get to hit that one tank when I attack, or does only the
strongest unit in the city get to hit the tank, just one time.
Your advice and experience in this kind of attack, please. Thanks

Civ4 attacks are one-on-one, against the defender with the best odds,
with a single exception. Artillery attacks the entire stack. That
includes units with "barrage".
If you can afford to, it is better to split like units into different
stacks. Otherwise the opp can damage your entire stack with a single
artillery attack. It may still be right to keep some defensive units
in a stack with offensive units.
It is usually best to attack with barrage units first, so that their
collateral damage takes place before you attack with your other units.
So if you have tanks and cavalry to attack a stack, attack first with
the tanks.

I've also found that if any unit in your stack can't attack (like it
used all its movement getting to the battle), the whole stack won't
attack. I've had to break up my stacks into sub-stacks when that
happens.

Jeffery,
Thanks for the excellent response to my question about Stacked Attacks.
The key thing here, I think, is that even when you attack from a Stack,
the computer still attacks just one-at-a-time in Civ 4. It speeds up
play, and allows the computer to pick the strongest unit to attack with
first, which saves you the time of having to go through the stack and
figure out which order to attack with manually. Thanks again to
everyone else for your comments too.
