I think the manual is pretty good, but the Official Strategy Guide is not.
Thee eprson who wriote it msised some fairly obvious thinsg; for example, he
doesn't mention that you can set the game to "always peace", probably
because he finds such a game inconceivable.

Actually it could make an interesting game if the cultural conversions
worked better.

I agree. I'll try it one of these days.

I've tried it. Even for a total non-warmonger like myself, it made for
a dull game. Kind of fun to plunk a completely unprotected city next to
the furious Japanese and devour them culturally while they are powerless
to fight back. But the AI does not seem to know that it is all peace,
all the time, and wastes a lot of their resources on armaments.

So basically, "always peace" gives the human player a overly huge
advantage and is surprisingly un-fun.

As I said, *IF* the cultural conversions worked better.

The last game I played I won a space victory. There were two of the
2nd place empire's cities rather surrounded by mine (we both took
cities from the English, these were *NOT* cities taken from me.) that
weren't revolting to me. I decided to see what would happen. I
conquered the rest of the world except for him, ensured I had a
considerable military superiority and sat back to see what would
happen.

1) There's a bug in the reporting. He's listed as the tech leader
despite the fact that I have something like 100 advanced techs on him.

2) Global warming is a problem. After something over 1000 years
nearly half of the world's population has died due to desertification.

3) I took some cities but others seem impossible to take. He took
over part of another empire and had 4 cities. I have taken 2 by
culture, the other two seem immortal. My cultural border gives one of
them two squares (not connected! Apparently culture borders don't
matter at sea.) and the other only a single square. This is in
addition to the two that prompted the experiment which were long since
reduced to 1 square but I since I have cities on both sides I can't
seee how much the border has pushed past them.

I'm vastly outspending him on culture, just about every border city
has at least one cathedral, some have 2 or 3. The lowest ratio of
culture between one of mine and one of his is 3:1 in my favor, some
are 10:1. It's been hundereds of years since a revolt, though. I've
got a finger of territory taken by culture that goes IIRC 4 squares
into his lands, up to a second-line city. Yet the first-line city
won't revolt.

I haven't played a lot of it, it's on my laptop for use when
travelling.
