The main news is that Circuit City has extended HD-DUD player returns
for store credit up to 3 months after purchase. The side news story is
they are also allowing the credit to be applied to Blu-ray players
including the PS3 upon customer request. This has been confirmed at
several Circuit City stores now. There has been some speculation about
how much the collapse of HD-DUD is going to cost Toshiba beyond just
their investment costs since retailers are now returning unsold and
returned HD-DUD players to Toshiba and asking for reimbursement. It
will probably end up in court in a few months. Either way, quite a few
people are taking the opportunity to use the return credit for PS3
systems. This is just going to bloom and bloom for the PS3, Blu-ray
and Sony.

Circuit City Trading In HD DVD for Blu-Ray Players, Says Employee
According to a Circuit City employee in Chicago, the consumer
electronics chain is trading in HD DVD players bought into their
stores "within 3 months of the announcement," as opposed to their 30-
day return policy. According to the internal memo announcing the
demise of the format, they will either give customers a Blu-ray player--
paying the price difference, if any--or a gift card. The trade-in,
however, will not be widely promoted and it will be only made
available if the customer asks for it. Have any of you tried this?

Circuit City extends HD DVD return time
No. 2 electronics retailer will accept returns within 90 days of
purchase
March. 6, 2008
RICHMOND, Va. - Circuit City Stores Inc. is getting on the Blu-ray
digital video format bandwagon by tripling the period in which
customers who purchased a rival HD DVD player can return them.
The nation's No. 2 electronics retailer has instructed its stores to
"take care of our customers" and accept returns of HD DVD players
within 90 days of purchase, spokesman Jim Babb said.
Several industry moves in recent weeks -- including the announcement by
creator Toshiba Corp. that it has stopped making HD DVD players and
discs -- have handed the format a clear defeat in the battle for
primacy in the next generation of movie-disc technology.
"The recent resolution of the next generation of video disc formats is
an important and singular development in the marketplace," Babb said
in an e-mail statement.
When Toshiba dropped out of the fight, it conceded to Sony's Blu-ray
format, which delivers crisp, clear pictures and sound on high-
definition TVs.
The biggest battle between two video formats since Betamax lost out to
VHS in the 1980s was resolved after multiple movie studios, including
Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co. Warner Bros. Entertainment and News
Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox, pledged to support the Blu-ray format.
In the long run, consumers are expected to benefit because they no
longer have to agonize over which technology to choose for high-
definition movies. But Toshiba's defeat leaves 1 million customers
worldwide with dead-end hardware.
Circuit City, which has a usual 30-day return policy, is allowing
customers who purchased HD DVD players to return them for store
credit. The policy doesn't apply to HD DVD movie discs.
The Richmond company noted that while some people may want to return
the players, others are buying them on clearance because they still
play high-quality HD DVDs and improve the playback of standard DVDs. >> Stay informed about: Circuit City allowing HD-DUD player returns for Blu-Ray Pl.. |

"MAY WANT TO RETURN THE PLAYERS"
Yeah, people are going to want to abandon their investment in their HD-
DVDs.
It's a marketing ploy to get idiots like Bliggie to buy a Blu-ray
player they don't want or need. >> Stay informed about: Circuit City allowing HD-DUD player returns for Blu-Ray Pl.. |

Lol. As angry as you may be at Blig for being the souce of an idiotic
post, the fact of the matter is this is a good thing. I would have
been extremely pissed if I bought an HD-DVD player within the last 3
months only to hear that they have been abandoned. This is great
freaking news if your goal is to have a SUPPORTED hi-def DVD player.
As much as you may hate the PS3 and Blu-Ray, people who bought a
player want to be able to play hi definition movies for years to come
and that is not the case with HD-DVD any more. Unless you own stock
in Toshiba, I would advise you to get over. >> Stay informed about: Circuit City allowing HD-DUD player returns for Blu-Ray Pl.. |

Yeah, it's a good thing to have a bunch of HD-DVDs and NOTHING TO PLAY
THEM ON!
BRILLIANT!

What's stupid is believing HD-DVD players are just going to stop
working.
I have friends with Betamax players that still work. My VHS player
still works great. And you can still purchase both through the used
market. >> Stay informed about: Circuit City allowing HD-DUD player returns for Blu-Ray Pl.. |

The people that Circuit City is trying to help with this offer are
people who likely got a player during the holidays as a gift from
someone else. The likelihood that they own tons of HD DVDs, especially
considering how fast Warner made their announcement (first or second
week of 2008), is pretty small.

Nobody stated that they would "just" stop working. One person
clarified that it's very possible they eventually will stop working.
I've had plenty of VCRs die on me. I've had a few DVD players die on
me as well. >> Stay informed about: Circuit City allowing HD-DUD player returns for Blu-Ray Pl.. |

No....it's called normal wear and tear.

What I would believe is stupidity is buying something, knowing that no more will
be made, and then believing the one I bought will last forever......NOT!!!

Hmm......
I've been around long enough to have worn out several VHS players, even a couple
DVD players......
Things do wear out, things do quit working.......

They obviously wanted a HD movie player when they bought the HD-DVD player
in the first place. Now that BD is going to be the standard for HD
movies, why not give them a chance to upgrade?
Granted, if someone is sitting on a huge stack of HD-DVD movies, they may
want to keep their HD-DVD player until they can get those replaced by BD
copies. But then again, if I thought choosing hardware in a format war
was unwise, buying up a bunch of media in the middle of a format war has
got to be borderline stupid.

I think SOMEONE's mad that they bought a bookshelf full of HD-DVD titles.
In the middle of a format war. And "lost".
