Hi everyone.
I'm sure everyone is familiar with the yearly update we usually get
from Thomas over the holidays. I was wondering if anyone has some
predictions? Obviously we'd all love to see JADE, but is this the
year? Will we see an ADOM bug-fix update? ADOM-Deluxe? Some sort of
new announcement? Just a link to YouTube? The possibilities are as
endless as your optimism.
Personally, I think we'll get a JAD.. no, I don't even want to say it.

I get the impression that ADOM Deluxe will never see the light of
day. Looks like JADE is getting the lions share of Thomas' time, and
ADOM is mostly in bug-fix mode (which is fair enough .. the ADOM code
has become a bit of a spaghetti-monster.) I wouldn't mind seeing a
bug-fix or two for ADOM, but I'm happy to wait however long that might
take.

I think we might see a JADE update or two (information, that is), but
probably no code. An ADOM update would surprise me, but hey, it is
possible. I just hope the Creator is well, whatever he's up to. I
bet he's busy, whatever he's doing.

On a less enthusiastic note, you can have a simple "I'm working on it"
message like last year, or the first year without a christmas update. I do
not hope so.
Well, he was "considering" the finishing of an initial JADE release one year
ago, so everything is possible. >> Stay informed about: Christmas Update Predictions |

Very little chance of JADE, and even less of an ADOM update. Some
progress report will be nice. I'm not too fussed about ADOM being
updated, since although it has a few bugs it's still great to play.
Any new features added would likely just introduce more bugs. Will be
brilliant when we get an initial JADE release though.

I don't dare to expect anything beyond just a new announcement and best
wishes for the holidays.
As a beside, there has been an idea on the #adom IRC channel to surprise
Thomas with a load of Christmas cards this year. If he lurks here, I may
just have blown the surprise, but it's a nice idea. I'd propose not to make
it too pushy, just best wishes for the holidays from an ADOM lover, but of
course everybody can decide that for themselves. Is that a nice idea?

Léon (aka Oliphaunt)

That's a very nice idea - will have to remember to participate. Will
suggest it to some others too.

He has given nothing... yet.
We have had few thoughts about this matter with friends, and we had few
ideas:
1) TB has gotten totally frustrated about ADOM/JADE and he has been drinking
for the last year moaning about life and everything.
2) He has gotten "a life" and adom.de domain expires 1.1.2008 giving the
Creator complete freedom in life.
3) He is going to post something in this year or at 1.1.2008.
Options 1&2 also mean, that all those postcards people send him make him
think something like: "Omg, what are all these people sending me
postcards... leave me alone!"
I'm still hoping for option #3 to happen, but I doubt that #2 is more
likely. >> Stay informed about: Christmas Update Predictions |

No, not at all. Just that maybe he felt like all great artists feel at some
point of their career: That the work is never going to be completed or
something. I'm *not* dissing his work at all, just thinking with friends
about chances what might have happened during this year. Maybe he has been
busy coding JADE and we recieve playable gamma or beta or some version. >> Stay informed about: Christmas Update Predictions |

Probably. Now that he has a real life (I guess) with
great job and girlfriend(s?) I don't think he's going
to spend another thought for roguelikes. I would do
the same if I could, just forget roguelikes and make
love to my girlfriend(s) all the time..

It's a lot of work done. You don't want to give that to
some apemonkeys who most likely don't have the vision
to improve the game as it should be. They will turn it
into a munchkin-fest just like you said. We have seen that
happening to Angband. Nethack avoids most attempts,
because the source code is hard to maintain and develop. >> Stay informed about: Christmas Update Predictions |

Angband is hardly an example of a game turned into a munchkin-fest. I do
not know of a single variant that would qualify and many are
significantly harder than vanilla. If anything, Angband could be a good
argument why release the code, IMO. (Not that it matters in this case)

Different people, different opinions. Perhaps Crawl is the perfect game
for you I find Angband much harder than ADOM. There is no point when
it becomes easier to play, as opposed to ADOM where the more your
progress, less likely you are to end up dead. I think I've never died
after passing DH2. In Angband, you're just as likely to be killed at
level 50 as in the beginning, which is only partly due to limited
inventory slots and lack of permanent resistances.
But my point was that variants aim to change some part of gameplay in a
meaningful way, mainly by changing theme (tolkinish, steam punk etc.)
and introducing corresponding monsters, items, spells etc. Others change
combat system for what is commonly considered to be more difficult. All
of them add a different spin to the game, which I think adds to the
game, rather than detracts from it.
