I just got Christmas Seaman.

Kinda.

It seems the message disc has been swapped out for a normal Japanese
Seaman disc (which actually needs to be wiped down as it won't get past
the opening speech). But I just wanted to double check to see if anyone
has seen an actual set where only the present disc comes with an
apparently regular copy of Seaman that actually works as a message disc.
I'm assuming not, as the main disc has the indicia for the regular
release Seaman t-39401M, while the slip cover packaging has the number
for the message disc, T-39403M, and the present disc has the normal
present disc number T-39404M. Did buying the receiver disc by itself get
the buyer a slipcover as well?

Since this was cheap for Christmas Seaman and I want it mainly for the
packaging, I'll probably accept it, but it's still disappointing,
espacially as some of the nice packaging goes with the message disc. And
I'd like to interact with Seaman, which I don't think can be done
without the message disc (or it being December 1999 and being in Japan
so the disc can connect to the server).

Assuming you could get it to work, somehow, what does it do? Is he
swimming around in at the North Pole, or something X-Mas Nights-ish?

As if plain old *Seaman* doesn't sound nasty enough *Christmas Seaman*
just plain, uh, its not right and *Japanese Seaman*, um. Couldn't have
Sega come up with something better than that, maybe Fishtank Simulator
featuring the voice of Leonard Nemoy or something.

Your right, I do have a dirty mind but thats besides the point. The
game, if you can call it that, has a *bad* name. Terrible.

True, one of the few to use the microphone (and I would think the
first) for the Dreamcast. But just think of having a conversation with
a phrase that started with "Hey, have you tried Seaman? Wow, its
really great, Seaman I mean, is really good, very unusual. You can
borrow my Seaman if you want to try it." Very wrong in so many ways.

These guys are located in the UK. Though I don't know how much they
could get it for, I'm sure they could get it. They helped me come up
with a copy of Devastator for Mega CD at one point. Just shoot them an
email, tell'em Bel sent you and they'll help you out. Smile

Unfortunately, at GameFAQs, about the only thing I'm finding are some
Vocabulary FAQs and whatnot. Sad Google may present more options, I
just didn't check it.

Are you kidding? The name is the best part of the game. It's completely
inoffensive and any discomfort you feel is only your own. Like a mirror,
it reflects only what's held up in front of it. Or something.

Seriously, you can't imagine that the game was named carelessly. There's
nothing objectionable in the game (apart from the main character being
acerbic and annoying) and none of the dialogue or art is suggestive in any
way. And even gamers who haven't played it know the game. It's a rare
example of brilliant, self-perpetuating marketing from Sega.

I think in the message disc he talks to you to get the message. I assume
he talks to you to deliver the message in the gift disc.

Our timing is funny... Sega just announced Seaman 2 for Playstation 2.
Same concept, different animal. And it ships with a controller that has a
built-in microphone and that classic Sega/Capcom six-button layout. That
last part is more exciting to me than the actual game itself.

What's weird is that they seem to be extending the concept, but not the
original story. The first Seaman had a backstory that stretched back into
ancient civilizations, and now that I remember it's impolite to post
spoilers I'll quit talking about that. This new game has you raising
miniature prehistoric humans cloned from an offshoot species of primate
they discovered in Chinese fossils. Wonder if they'll tie it in with the
first game plot-wise or not.

-KKC, searching for info on the controller and whether it's dualshock
compatible or not...

Uh, is it actually out super soon?
http://www.seaman.tv/
says something about 9/22/06...
Since the controller only has one analog stick
http://www.seaman.tv/seamic/index.html
it seems like it wouldn't be fully dual shock compatible...
(Searching showed the game was announced as in development a year ago)

1up and Joystiq say 2007 in Japan, and no US release date yet. I don't
know what that September date is all about.

That stinks. The hunt for a suitable dualshock substitute continues
unfulfilled. Smile

-KKC, who finally got the PSO server working the way he wants. We're 24
hours away from Internet testing.

No.. I think that portion of the poster with 9/22/06 is just part of
the advertisement for the game, since it lists "Russia Cultural Center"
and "Russia Biotechnology Development Center" in it's credits. The
actual release info is in the box beneath that where it lists the
price. The release date is simply listed as "This Winter"
