"“What we’ve discovered is that the Sims is a very private experience
for a lot of people,” Rod Humble, head of the Sims studio, said in a
telephone interview last week. “It’s private because it’s set in real
life. Rather than on a console in the living room where everyone can
see, you generally play on a handheld or on a PC in the study, where
no one can look over your shoulder. You get to tap into this wonderful
childhood imaginary game, which is ‘What if I could create my own
little world and all the people in it and watch them go through their
business and jump in and change things when I want?’ That is a pretty
personal fantasy.”"
They still have no clue why The Sims Online failed, do they? As I
recall, Simmers were eager to share their little worlds, but that
turned out not to be what TSO was about. No, we had to share EA's
meager, unimaginative little world. Watching your Sims and everybody
else's Sims reading to gain skill points--yeah, there's a good time.
Not.

I played the free trial, briefly. The most fun time I recall was
getting together in TSO with Libby (who posted here at the time) and
having her Sim show me the new animations that were in TSO.
I remember that people here were hoping that we could somehow use or
recreate our actual Sims and houses, with custom content, and share
our existing games across the network and visit each other and stuff
like that. We weren't looking for a situation where we had to build
the same old skill points (with no fast forward possible) for some
goals that EAxis set up for us, with no custom content and very little
opportunity to play out our own fantasies together.

All that talk about teenaged girls... They're having some sort of fantasy
themselves, right? Apart from being on these newsgroups I'm also a member of
a couple of communities. None of which seem to be full of teenaged girls.
OK, so the boys are outnumbered by us girls, but there are not all that many
teens.
And the idea of psychologists using the game as a "OK, so crete your family
and show me"? Can't wait for THAT empirical journal article to come out and
the sight of cognitive behaviourists flocking to stores in order to purchase
their copy of the game to use in therapy.
Cheers!

Wouldn't you just love to show them the sims we really create. Boy, they
could get something out of that. And the story lines. Are we really living
our fantasy life?

If we are remind me never to be in a dark alley with Granny - to think twice
about being in a dark alley with Maxon and to _never_ ever ever ask anybody
about what my Neighbourhoods reveal about me.
I remember an interview with an author in the 80's (I can't remember who she
was). The interviewer asked her about where her idea for the subtle
under-meaning 'x' came from and how many people she thought got it? The
writer looked at her rather shocked and replied that there wasn't any subtle
meaning 'x' or otherwise. It was just a book.
