Pretty interesting. It has 3 distinct parts

1) Causes of the Crimean war & Russell, the war reporter
2) The charge itself - plain telling of the event - step by step
3) The aftermath, the Tennison poem, political and military
ramifications for the British and the Russians.

For me the interesting bits were the first and last part, but that's
probably because I already knew the history of the charge itself.

Only in the sense that they talked about how much is costed to
purchase/commision a colonelcy in the cavalry (6K pounds - 1850 pounds
that is) and that you were supposed to procure other stuff for your
men too - including smart looking uniforms.

I found I got the best information on the Crimean War and the Charge
of the Light Brigade (and the Heavy Brigade as well) from "Flashman At
The Charge" by the recently deceased George McDonald Fraser. Little
know fact that was Flashman's farting that was an primary cause of the
charge. Too much champagne on an empty stomach.

cardigan designed the uniforms his men wore.
fashion design and seducing his officers wives were his main hobbies.

purchase was a strange system but it was also the officers pension as he
could sell his commission if he desperately needed money or when he retired

Just reading Clive Ponting's book, so this broadcast's some welcome
serendipity.

Sad to read about George McDonald Fraser.

So in the spirit of Flashman: Purchase was a damned good system that served
to keep out riff raff with delusions about their knapsack having a baton in
it for generations. Shame it'd never work now that any colonial or Scot can
make the money required. <g>
