I agree with you, things like this are a design flaw. Obviously it helps
that you can just choose not to use the uber skills/items, but still the
temptation should not be there in the first place. Most uber-skills involve
a failure of AI.
If an invisible guy walks up to you and starts poking you with a dagger,
you're either going to fight back (somewhat clumsily), or flee. You're not
going to just stand their and get slaughtered.
I think the traditional D&D style approach is best where mages have serious
hit point penalties and can't cast infinite spells in a day. Once a mage
gets really high level he probably should be more or less godlike.
