Post subject: Centipede - WG 4900 Monitor Question - What is my problem called so I can search?
Archived from groups: rec>games>video>arcade>collecting (more info?)

I have capped it and it has worked fine. Now at the top of the screen,
it goes down at an angle about 1 inch they goes back up and down. I do
not know what to search for in the older post.

I think maybe a cap went bad on me.

Can you tell me what the condition is called to I can search and ask
for help.

Thanks
Kajunlion

Try replacing C313.. sounds like vertical deflection problem or
tearing.

Look for any caps on the board that don't appear flat on top. I
recently was working on a megatouch machine.
The chassis was hissing. I looked through the caps and found that the
330uf 400v cap that runs high voltage through
it was bad. The cap swelled in top and wasn't flat, also there was one
cap on the chassis like this and one on the neck board. Replaced all
and everything is fine now.

I had a 4900 doing something similar a few years back, it would pulse
between full screen and a single line. It turned out to be a bad pot
on the vertical deflection which I found after working on nearly
everything else on the board!

4900's used a different type of pot and they seem to be prone to
strange failures. It sounds like the same thing you're seeing.

Let us know what you find out for the archive.

Can you take a picture and post somewhere? What game is it running?
Could be a horizontal tear.
