I filled the pits and in my enthusiasm and nativity (sp?) I filled all of
them leaving me not one to jump down in. Now afterwards, I didn't sweat it
too bad and continued to clear out the level, the final couple of rooms.

Then I dig down with pick and wand of digging and the floor is too hard.
Please do not tell me my game is over now.

Haha I did that myself once; controllable level teleport will get you
there, as I found out (I was lucky and happened to be a Valkyrie that
game).

I'm of the opinion that boulders dropped into Castle trapdoors
shouldn't plug them up. This is simply to remove the illogical
situation of digging down through a recently plugged trapdoor and
somehow striking bedrock.

You can level teleport down to the valley of the dead,
by any standard means of controlled level teleport.

Magic. (Almost unthinkable in NetHack, I know.)

It would seem more elegant to set a flag for the entire level.
If the level is castle-like, digging downwards always produces
a hole, never a pit. Otherwise, diggging behaves as normal.
The bottom level of Sobokan would also be castle-like, and
probably some of the quest levels.

You'd also need to make everywhere to the left of the castle
throne undiggable, via the level description files, but that
doesn't seem obviously difficult, for someone better at C than
me.
