It would seem more elegant to set a flag for the entire level.
If the level is castle-like, digging downwards always produces
a hole, never a pit. Otherwise, diggging behaves as normal.
The bottom level of Sobokan would also be castle-like, and
probably some of the quest levels.
You'd also need to make everywhere to the left of the castle
throne undiggable, via the level description files, but that
doesn't seem obviously difficult, for someone better at C than
me.
