Greetings everyone,

I have a question about CRT tubes. I suspect someone here would know
the answer, or at least be able to point me in the right direction.

I noticed on all the CRT tubes I've looked at, there is a thick wire
running around the perimeter of the face of the tube. I'm *not*
talking about wire from the anode cap. The wire I'm referring to
starts as two conductors on the monitor pcb, is wrapped in what looks
like electrical tape, and circles the tube. Anyone know what this is,
and what the correct positioning is for this wire?

Thanks,

Anthony

That is the degaussing coil. It helps stop the monitor frame from being
magnetized. this would produce color distortion on the screen It is
usually tied to the four corner brackets.

On the average I would say about 2 to 3 inches from the edge. The
degause happens as the power is applied to the monitor. It only lasts
for a few seconds. To check and see if the Degause circuit is working,
I use an analog meter and set the voltage setting to
200 VAC you will see a V rise for a second or two. The coil size is
going to dictate how close you can get to the edge. secure the 4
corners with black wire ties. I try and make it even all around.
