What's the point? It's like buying an alarm clock add-on for your Game
Cube. Why not just buy a damn alarm clock? Or how about a telescope
add-on for the Wii? Now you can look at the cosmos while you play Mario
Tennis 3... just make sure the telescope is connected to the system, or
else it wont work.

Hmmmm...Let's see an inexpensive HD-DVD player seems to be the obvious
freakin' reason.

If you want an inexpensive HD-DVD player, why not buy an inexpensive
HD-DVD player?

Why the hell would you want to connect it to your XBOX 360? It makes no
sense.

I can't wait for the electric toothbruth add-on for XBOX 360. That's

People interested in HD-DVD as a stand alone product are not interested in
buying a console to 'ADD-ON' the feature to get it. For that price, add $100
or so, and they can have a 'stand-alone' product.

Besides, by the looks of things HD-DVD will be dying off by the time this
peripheral launches. Blu-ray has a lot more studio support, and this is what
this is about is movies. Oh, and videogames too.

If you've already got a 360 and a tv with limited number of HD inputs, it
seems like a reasonable option.

I used my PS2 as a dvd player for a few years after launch as I didn't have
enough to buy both. It was either $200 for a standalone player or $10 for a
PS2 remote.

So it's for people who have an HDTV but not a HDTV receiver? ok...

You think the XBox 360 bolt-on HD-DVD drive will be $10?

The PS2 already had a DVD drive to play DVD games that couldn't fit on a
CD, so it made perfect sense to play DVD movies as well.

Adding a HD-DVD drive to a XBox 360 makes exactly as much sense as a
bolt-on HD-DVD drive for a PS2 or PS3.

Do they make inexpensive HD-DVD players? In time maybe.

If you use the 360 as a media center, it makes perfect sense.

Well, using your line of reasoning, why would you want an embedded
BluRay player in your PS3?

No. Microsoft has repeatedly said the HD DVD add on is for movie play back
only.

Not exclusively for those people. Having an HDTV receiver doesn't
automatically give you an infinite number of HD inputs.

No, probably around the $100 -$150 range...well below the price of a stand
alone HD-DVD player.

....not to mention it helped with initial sales since the PS2's launch
library was absolute garbage.

so it made perfect sense to play DVD movies as well.

except that DVD movie play back adds to the overall price of the console.

Well the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 will be inexpensive because the 360
hardware will be doing virtually all of the work to decode/output the
video...and I'm certain that the hardware in the PS2 is not really suited
for that...though I'm sure that the PS3 could handle it with no problem.

You're right though, adding a HD-DVD drive to a XBox 360 makes exactly as
much sense as a
HD-DVD add on for the PS3. That way, Sony could have stuck with a much
faster DVD ROM drive with the PS3 instead of the horribly slow BluRay drive,
Sony wouldn't *need* to include a HDD for data caching to make up for the
slow Blu Ray drive...and the cost of the console would go down
significantly...ultimately giving consumers the choice in regards to how
they want to view high def movies. Too bad Sony didn't go that route,
probably would have helped with sales. Now after E3, the PS3 is pretty much
a joke to the press and "gaming" public.

Are you saying the PS3 has a lower speed drive than the (DVD-based) PS2?

Anyways, one thing is for certain, the battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD
is a train wreck and will delay adoption and drive up costs for both
formats.

No, what he's saying is that you could use a faster DVD drive. They are
ubiquitous. You'd be hard pressed to find a DVD drive now a days that
wouldn't outperform the PS3's BluRay drive. The drive in the XBox360 is
faster.

There's no real demand for it that warrants the price right now, so it's
honestly also going to be competing with DVD, just like DVD Audio discs
compete with CDs. There's no compelling reason for the average user to buy
them. It's not like analog broadcasts versus HDTV broadcasts. With that,
the former was so obviously inferior due to static, etc. DVD's already
analog. Most people aren't going to jump even if they do see a difference
until Blockbusters, etc, starts stocking them.

The battle is moot.

DVD/HDDVD/BluRay's time are limited due to other channels of distribution,
like internet, take a stronger footing.

PS3 plays games off the blu-ray drive. It's an awesome bonus that it
can play blu-ray movies. And if I buy a PS3, it will be because it's a
blu-ray player more than a video game machine. It's a 2 for 1 deal in
my eyes.

The XBOX 360 is not a HD-DVD player, it's a video game console. It
doesn't play games off the HD-DVD drive add-on either. It's utterly
pointless to buy an HD-DVD drive and attach it to your XBOX 360.
Completely pointless. You might as well buy a nail an ipod to it.

If XBOX 360 *came* with an embedded HD-DVD drive and played games off
that HD-DVD drive, then it would have made perfect sense. Just like
having PS2 or XBOX play DVD's.

However, buying a *seperate* pointless add-on, a full year after you
bought the console is ridiculous. And yes, I would be saying the exact
same thing if Sony shipped PS3 without blu-ray and instead asked us to
buy a seperate blu-ray drive that couldn't play games a year after PS3
came out.
