Hey all.
I had never played a roguelike before but decided to try the stones version of crawl this week and have found myself strangely addicted. I lost my best character so far yesterday, and have some questions I'm hoping can get answered here.
For my troll berserker, is there any reason to ever train other melee weapons besides unarmed? I tried training mace/flails midway through since I'd gotten some giant stuff with huge damage, but ended up switching back.
Also, should I kill skilltraining for things like Evocation that I end up getting a point in just due to wand use? How about for weapon types I'm not wielding? (ie Does it hurt having flails turned on for xp if I'm going unarmed, or does it not matter since nothing will go there anyway)
Is there a way to select which darts you will use when "firing", or any other ammo, like which needles with a blowgun? It always seems to decide for me. Unlike weapon selection or throwing an item, I don't get a screen of choices.
Also, ghosts of your previous characters, I seem to get waxed by these a fair amount. Are these just thrown in to make it harder, or when they show up is it generally in place of some other tough monster you'd be getting instead? What I'm wondering is if my game is just going to keep getting harder and harder and harder the longer I play.
So far I've been having a blast using random character/race combos. If I get highscore for my game I'll replay that combo. Thusfar Troll Berserker has been by far my most effective, which I think is supposed to be one of the more popular and easy ones.
Here is the one that I lost last night, and I think the thing that killed me was a stationary monster that I could've gotten away from if I'd been thinking.

Couple of questions here, on the mutation is that from me using haste/might too much? I tried to never cast if it showed me as glowing, but do I need to be even more cautious that that?
For wands, I'm not sure how conservationist I should be with their charges? As it is right now, I feel like I probably just spam them sometimes when maybe I should save for later.
And the main question, should I have just run away from that plant? If not, what is the proper way to deal with the acid spitting deathvegetable? On a side note this was so crushing as I'd just made it through the Orc Mines (only 2nd time I'd even found them) and was really feeling pretty invincible.
Please point out anything else that can be gleaned from that log as something I should change or was doing wrong, etc.
