As it appears the many issues of the hl2.exe file and the
datacache.dll file have been around longer than they should have. At
this point it is clear that Valve may need help. My point here is, if
anyone was ever able to find a permanent fix or even just the cause of
the problem behind that notorious dll should be rewarded in some way.

In the mean time wouldnt it be helpful if we could compile all the
rumoured fixes to the hl2.exe stop error (datacache.dll crash)?

I've never encountered that error personally. Does it affect HL2 and
all mods/addons?

When a game or mod crashes and reports an error in a .DLL, that doesn't
mean there's necessarily a problem with that particular DLL, just that
the game was running some module from that DLL at the time it ran into
an error. Sometimes this can be down to some kind of memory
corruption, the possible reasons for which are pretty vast - Including
hardware faults or overheating, or even some other background process or
utility running into a buffer overflow.

It could very well be a hardware issue as the problem has been found
even on newly installed OS. However, there is no reason for this
engine and that particular dll to be the only one not working while
several other more hardware intensive games like CoD4 and UT3 work
like wonders.
