Bug in Exult for SI?

I've just got to the castle in SI where Mortenegro is trapped on an
island. He says the castle is a magic free area and all the spells he
has tried casting haven't worked. However I cast Telekinesis on the
bridge winch to the island he was held on to set him free. I was just
wondering if this was a bug in Exult and whether magic really is
impossible in the original game in that castle?

Also in the same castle there is a chaos prisoner who has lost an
important key to a rat that scurried down a rat hole. I have tried
attacking the rat hole with swords but nothing I seem to do will allow
me to go down it. I know that the rat hole goes to a treasure room but
I can't figure out how to get down it.

Does anyone have a subtle clue? I can't help but wonder if one of the
more mystical potions might do the job?

PS. I don't suppose anyone knows how to get past the metal grate in the
sewer in the Bafford mission in Thief do they?

It's a spell, not a potion, but you're on the right track.
