Which probably won't happen in the US if the value of the dollar keeps sliding
downwards........

Best I can see is if the prices stay the same.

True, but then, we could look at DVD's early years and not feel so badly.
Blu-ray isn't even 2 years old yet, right? By this time in DVD's
lifecycle, players were still close to a thousand dollars.

I remember several years ago asking staff at Hollywood Video if they were going
to start carrying DVDs (or more than just a few DVDs) back when they place was
full of VHS.

They told me no, since not that many people owned DVD players.....<grin>

"the people" had nothing to do with it. The decision was made at the
studio, and to a lesser extent, the retailer level.

Studios like blu-ray for its DRM, and retailers like it because they make
more per sale than they did selling HD-DVD stuff.

DRM + Higher Prices - does that sound like something the consumer would
choose?

Which is exactly why most video stores don't carry any high-def discs.
Hopefully, things fall in place for Blu-Ray to gain mainstream
relevance because it's getting harder to get stuff from Blockbuster
Online as it is...
