Why can't these damned patches download in the background while we're
playing?

I had an hour with nothing special to do so I figured I'd get in an hour
or so of WoW.

Get on the computer, log it, and it tells me the patch was downloaded
successfully (which is moronic since it obviously isn't).

So I restart WoW, it's now half an hour later and the damned thing is
STILL downloading.

Since I basically lost a days playing I should get a days credit to my
account (yeah, like THAT'S going to happen!).

I had that today as well, damn thing didn't even have the common decency to
create a torrent file so I could use Azureus to get it at a reasonable pace.
Why, oh WHY isn't there an option to set them to download whilst we're
playing for those of us with beefy connections.

There is an option for that, in the launcher, but it only applies to
patches which have been set up for background-download by Blizzard.
Generally that means patches above a certain size, and the most recent
patches have been fairly small, relatively speaking.

There are plenty of sites around that mirror the patches, and are a lot
quicker to download than through the Blizzard downloader.

I had problems yesterday too. But then I just visited wowwiki and found a
patch mirror:

Jeffrey obviously thought there was a problem.

It's the default setup - download patches only during the game. You
shouldn't have to change anything.
But it doesn't download certain patches in the background, either it's
supposed to be like that as some have said, or the downloader is broken.
I suppose if you're online when they release the patch it will dl during
the game. If you log-on after the whole patch has been released then maybe
it will dl it all before despite your settings. That's how it seems to me.

They can. If you use the launcher, when patch data is available , click
on the options button and change the settings in there. I have mine set
to start downloading when I am playing and to continue downloading after
I have exited the game.

Of course, this only helps when they put out the patch files in dribs
and drabs beforehand. When the patches are released in one go, as this
week's was, and they are less than 20MB, there isn't much of a problem
downloading them all in one go anyway.

There was a pproblem, on french servers anywhere, anywhere from 30
minutes to 5h to download the 18.3 Mb patch...

You might be right. It's not right to expect every customer to be an expert
in computer, network and Internet technology.

I've found, in the past, that most download problems are due to firewall
setups at the client end. If I open the correct ports on my router, then
it's generally a fast download. That said, not everyone knows how to do
that, so it would be a nice idea if Blizzard were to provide the patches
as downloadable files from the website in addition to using the Torrent
downloader.
