I've been experiencing a strange problem with a faster computer I got for
my Mappy Mame cab. No matter how much ram it has in it, DosMame and
ArcadeOS only shows 14 Megs of free physical memory and 141 Megs of free
virtual memory. This doesnt cause any problems with smaller games like
Mappy, Galaga, Mr Do., etc... Larger games like Guwange, 19xx, and Dangon
Feveron load very slow and have significant slowdown.

I've tried from 512 Megs to 128 Megs of ram with the same results.
It's a 1Ghz compaq computer and I'm not using the onboard video.

short of another computer, any one have any possible ideas what might be
wrong?

i don't know how arcadeos and dosmame show free memory and how you
were able to setup virtual memory in dos. can you post your config.sys
and autoexec.bat?

here are some issues i can think of:

1. are you using himem.sys? from win9x? earlier versions will only
create 64mb of xms memory.

2. are you using smartdrive.exe? this caches the harddisk for faster
access.

3. do you have cwsdpmi.exe available in you path environment? mame
uses this to create virtual memory but there isn't much user
configurability in it.

Not sure, but can DOS access that much memory?

I know this is an old thread, but an idea I just had is to install Win98
, and boot it in DOS mode. It should address all the memory and you can
use the official MAME binary too. Another thing to check is BIOS
settings, make sure you havent set some weird setting and that the BIOS
reports all the memory too.

Let us know if you solved it!
