Hi Folks,

Another week, another update:

*** Birth of America patch 1.03 readme ***
friday, March 10, 2006

Bugs fixes
- In some cases, indians units would be unable to set an ambush.
- In some cases, an army having crossed a river would keeps the penalty for
more than one turn.
- bug in the script engine, leading to Fort Henry (FIW scenarios) unable to
be built.
- Lakes and rivers under snow weather wont show anymore has being frozen (on
the map).

Interface additions
- Its now possible to rename or delete a saved game. Move the mouse over the
savegame line to have the keys used for these operations.
- Scrolling redone: smooth scrolling at start, double speed, reduction in
texture usage during scrolling (should lead to a decrease of a Blue Screen
error for the user suffering from a random bsod).
- You can have the battle report shows after each battle, during turn
processing. To activate this pausing, check the corresponding checkbox in
the Options window.
- Bullets representing the companies of a regiment are now shown, for each
regiment (regiment panel, center botton of the screen).
- Supplies units now have a supply bar shown (regiment panel).

AI
- Refined how the AI moves supply and artilleries, these units should now be
protected better in hostile territories.
- Reworked how AI considers local opportunities, the AI will now considers
these opportunities better, without taking more risks.

Database and scenarios changes
- erroneous link fixed between Kawanake and Richelieu (ghost river!)
- minors modifications on various scenarios scripts.

(more AI improvements to come in the next patch, stay tuned!)

Try another avenue of approach ?

"Pocus" - the OP - is one of the developers - he might look into this.

Yes, I would love to take advantage of this, but the publishers will not
send me a serial number, even though I bought, paid for, and downloaded the
game nearly two weeks ago.

I have sent several emails to Rodolphe Bouchez but am still without a serial
number.

Does anyone know what one has to do to get what one has paid for??

Grateful for any suggestions.

Mike

They actaully sent me an email with it but it was stuck in my spam folder
and dumped. When I rewrote them I gave them my order number and they
responded real quick with a download link.

This is exactly what happened to me, but in my case it had not yet been
dumped and I did find it in the end.

The smooth scroll is much better. Had to use the arrow keys before.

On the down side I got errors twice in a row after battle AI moved.
Battle screen is blank, Click ok to close out and crash to desktop.

Hi,

I'd like to make a couple of comments/suggestions on BoA. First of
all, congratulations! I expected good things after reading the
reviews here but it's exceeded my expectations. I haven't been this
impressed with a wargame since Red Devils over Arnheim. CotA (if it
comes out this year <g>) is gonna have some serious competition for
the best wargame of 2006.

OK, enough gushing, there are a couple of problems that I've run
across.
- . I'm running the 1.03b patch and I managed to crash the game from
the combat resolution screen by clicking on one of the information
icons in the row at the bottom. I didn't have a recent save to try
and recreate it and I've just avoided clicking on the icons since
then.
- The game has a habit of taking over my desktop (running an ATI 9800
pro). If I tab out to a different program that isn't running full
screen, I won't get my windows desktop in the background, I get the
game screens. Even if I open my windows task, I'll keep the game
screen as the background.

Not sure if these next two are bugs, UI issues or whether I'm just
missing something. Both refer to the 1775 campaign as the British.
- there are two active land units that start on an island in the far
south. It's impossible to load these units onto the transport in the
usual way, by merging the two tabs. It is possible to put the units on
the transport if I launch the transport by moving it to the adjacent
coastal square and then drag the land units onto the small icon (for
the transport) that's in the ocean.
- There are some Hessian reinforcements that appeared in 1776 (I
think) in Boston, these take up 4 command points per regiment. Not
sure if these guys are just harder to command than usual (rowdy
european Karp fishermen? <g>) or whether there's an error in the
database.

Finally, a couple of general comments.

- The one thing I've run across that really bugs me is how the games
are saved. It's not just bad, it's probably the worst that I've ever
seen. A minor problem is that it insists on filling up the save-game
directory with a lot of saves that I don't care about. I've already
gone in once and just deleted all of the saves to keep things clean.
The main problem however is that it insists on overwritting my saves!
From what I can tell, the game insists on overwriting that save with
the information from the beginning of the next turn. I'd like to
suggest that you take the approach that Paradox does with EU/HOI. For
automatic saves that the computer does, just write it into a file
called 'autosave', and save the previous one in oldautosave to allow
recovery from things like corrupt turns and save games. Then you could
use the ingame save button to save games in the format that it
currently does, by scenario and date. That save however, should be at
the beginning of that game turn.

- OK, this next one is minor and you could take the fact that I even
notice as a compliment. It's unheard of that I get caught up enough
in a game to pay attention to the weather patterns. Having said that,
the winter weather in the deep south just don't work right. A place
like Orangeburg should have snow once every few years, not a couple of
times a year. This winter was admittedly warmer than usual but we
didn't have a single stretch where it stayed below freezing for 24
hours in a row (in Orangburg). If you drew a line between Ninety-six
and Charlotte, freezing/snow should be a lot less likely between there
and the coast. When it does occur however, it comes in a large weather
front. You don't get random patches like you do in game, the whole
area will be covered except for the coastal provinces.

Anyways, best of luck with your game. I really hope it does well so we
see the engine used for other scenarios.

Regards,
Frank

Are we speaking of the same game? I know not Rodolphe Bouchez, so you're
perhaps mailing to the wrong person. Our forum is open to your problems, and
the correct address for such issues is contact.DeleteThis@ageod.com

its corrected for 1.04, thanks for the report though.

you have to minimize BoA first, by clicking on the small desktop icon in
your taskbar. This will collapse all windows&applications, including the
game. Then restore the one you want.

strange. if the said units are not locked, then they should not behave like
this. Send me the saved game to support RemoveThis @ageod.com please.

ahah, not a bug. Hessian have the GER flag, so you need at least one
prussian general with them, so that they only cost 1 command... Otherwise
they will cost 4. Same thing would happen if you wanted to command indians
with an english general who has not the ability: anglo/indian command.

its not purposely done like that to bother players, rest assured. Its
because the game NEED to saves informations from one turn to another, and
the most logical thing to do is keeping the previous name... otherwise this
would be a far greater mess.

Now, the novelties and things you have perhaps missed:

a) in 1.03 you can delete in-game saved game
b) in 1.03 you can rename a game
c) previous turns are saved under the backup directories (12) in the save
directory of the game you are currently playing. Its always possible to
restore a turn which went bad...

Perhaps there is the "save as" option which is missing, i agree on that.
