Well I downloaded the game last night and dove right in to try and get a
feel for it. Overall my impressions are good, however the game has an
unfinished feel to it. Minor issues like text running outside the display
box, or major concerns like inadequate documentation leave me thinking they
rushed it out a tad early. The tutorial doesn't work. I reached a page on
the tutorial text display for turn one that instructed me to advance to the
next page (for further instruction) by clicking the lower right arrow, and
there was no arrow.
The manual does tell players that supply and logistics was a huge issue to
warfare during this period, but then they neglect to tell you how any of
that works in the game. I know units will draw supply from supply trains and
depots they are stacked with, but what if these two items are not present in
a units zone? Do units draw supply from cities and depots over a distance or
only from their current zone? If they are allowed to draw from cities
several zones away, is it movement based or a fixed number of zones?
How do units replace losses? Do they simply draw them from the region
(State) they are in or do they have to be inside a city? Is there a minimum
city size needed before replacements will be drawn from a city? Do units
have to be in their home region in order to draw replacements or will they
draw them anywhere?
These are the most pressing questions I have and there are lots of smaller
issues that I guess I'll figure out via playing the game over time. One such
example would be whether or not a besieging army can build a depot in the
surrounding zone of a city it is besieging. Will the depot appear in said
city as the manual appears to imply or will a depot appear in the zone under
protection of the besieging forces? Guess I'll just have to spend a supply
train and find out.
I think this is the same outfit (publishers are different, but dev team is
the same I think) that did Pax Romana which also was released in an
unfinished state. Although patches and upgrades were promised, they never
materialized. Birth of America feels far more playable than Pax was (no
glaring bugs noticed in my first foray into the game), but it has been
released too early in my opinion.

I thought they explained supply quite well. Yes it does come from cities if
you're in that region/ It also explains how it effects combat and movement
and the different regions such as wilderness that has no supply.

Not sure you've addressed my questions at all, I know they draw from their
current zone. My question is can they draw over a distance, the manual does
not define very well how logistics actually work. I'm not even 100% sure
units in a zone will draw from a city unless they are actually inside said
city.

No. not in that time period. It would have to come from the surrounding
region except the actual supply trains carried.

Also you can see each units supply. During the after combat screen you can
see the supply level...for both sides.
