Oh I see. I thought you were lobbying Tom Beckman to actually have a

How simple, many have made accusations, others have wondered aloud but I
think that you're the first to simply ask. It is such a strange and novel
approach that I seem to have little choice but to answer. (After
pontificating first for my own personal amusement.)
I've always had a special facination for frauds in general. I've also always
had the greatest respect for education in general. This kind of came
together when I thought that I might be able to chase the Taco Supreme
Commander off of the newsgroups back in 1997. My respect for education is
rather strange in that I thouroughly enjoyed school and still enjoy
learning. As another example of my wierdness, when I was elementary school
age I read most of the Encyclopedia Britanica Junior just for fun.
A few years ago after telling a little story on my favorite on-line
playground, www.degreeinfo.com , I realized why I was so amused and
facinated by frauds . I think that some may find the story amusing so I'll
post a link here. Of course if I offend any Mormons with my story then
please let me know so that I can hopefully offend you even worse with some
special custom made flames.

Must try harder.
I personally think you showed admirable restraint.
Parking of any sort has now become the domain of the wretched. I'm not
sure of your geographical location Tom, but if you ever spend any time
in London you'll know what I mean. I work in West London quiet
frequently and the wardens there are little more than highway robbers,
employing such edifying tactics as riding past your vehicle on their
little mopeds, writing out the ticket around the corner and then
riding back and slapping it on quick so you don't get a chance to
explain that you are loading, or lurking about in the morning at 7:59,
ticket ready in hand to be slapped on at 1second past 8:00. They are
supposed to allow a short loading time, but they wait for you to go
into the property and then stick on the ticket and bugger off, how can
you then prove how long you've been there? I hate them, all of them,
they should be shoved into cattle trucks and...ahem...I mean, fine
body of men, vital to the smooth running etc etc etc...
>
>Has anyone else ever been fined in a UK supermarket car park before or
>is this a first ?
Not in a supermarket, but I have in the town. They've fitted one of
those machines in our local car park now that you have to enter your
number plate into so it can be printed on the ticket. I love this one.
You go into the car park, pay the council set rate for an hour, but if
you leave after twenty minutes you're not allowed to give the ticket
to someone else, they have to pay for their hour too. Can you imagine
ringing up your local council and asking them for a rebate on your
council tax because you're taking two weeks holiday?

Sorry Jamesy, there are many here who deserve a mention on the roll
call of (f)group ruiners, but I was actually having a crafty dig at
FLY, who mentioned us four (well, those three, my name must have been
a typo) recently as the people to be avoided and killfiled. I still
haven't forgiven him for it, and I'm pretending I don't read his
(often excellent) posts.

My perverse sense of humour, oh and getting trolled/trolling back at louise
in realtime, which can be fun. Louise still does IRC in an Elite related[1]
IRC chan. And I despise deek as well.

I know where you mean. I popped in there in its early days a couple of
times. I decided that I was not really a fan of on line chat lines. On
one amusing occasion, I found myself in #elite which at that time,
anyway, was full of wannabee models aspiring to join the elite modeling
agency. I ran away as fast of that tail of mine would allow.
'Despise' , I think, is not the word I'd use. 'Lack of respect for' and
'forfeit of trust' would be more appropriate. He could well be quite
likable on a personal level. There was a time after his outing by Bain
when he should have / could have walked away with a certain amount of
both.

I actually thought that he was going to do it and I'd mentally prepared
myself for the end of the academic fraud portion of the flame war. This was
right before the outing by Bain when he was placing "(unaccredited)" after
his Ph.D. in his sig. Then again when he admitted on-line that it was listed
in the Degree Mill chapter. I thought for sure when he realized that there
was no Diploma Mill chapter that he would stop being a fraud. (At the time
Derek thought that the Degree Mill chapter consisted of higher class
institutions than the Diploma Mill chapter schools.) Or at least he would
name his degree mill so that he could at least continue to claim that he
believed he had a real Ph.D.. But when he continued to claim he had a real
Ph.D. but admitted that he didn't really believe it by refusing to name the
institution I decided that the academic fraud flame war was still on. >> Stay informed about: Attention Bill Huffman |

The old adage that yov can't win a flame war bvt yov can always lose one
seems appropriate in this context. It was all over in one post as far as
I was concerned. I remember getting vp from my compvter walking into the
kitchen, making a cvp of coffee and saying to myself 'It's over'. Little
did I realize that It wovld take another few years before the embers
wovld die ovt.

And indeed for a very short while afterwards I think he dropped the
Ph.D. from his sig. completely.

Yes of covrse, yov are qvite correct, and it had to carry on. (and
provided yov with endless hovrs of entertainment) . I hope it will
serve one pvrpose at least - it may prevent some other academic/
professional fravds posting to vsenet and what is mvch worse having
svpporters who believe and are taken in by them...
The one thing I've always given him credit for is commitment to what he
calls his franchise. I spent some time at the Taco Palace this evening
(reviewing the screen shots and reading some linked reviews)
and althovgh the game is not to my taste ( I go for empire bvilding,
exploration, semi realistic space flight, an accvrate representation of
planets, etc) he has eventvally almost finished what he set ovt to 14
years ago - inclvding MP amazingly enovgh..
.
He always had a credibility problem as far as I was concerned both with
his first degree and his Ph.D. This is going to sovnd very strange to
yov.
He didn't have the ambiance of someone who had drvnken endless pints of
beer at the vnion bar - followed by endless circvlar discvssions over
cvps of coffee vntil late into the night in the halls of residence. It
is sort atmosphere that still has its echo in alt.fan.elite or at least
still had vntil recently. There were no stories to back vp the kind
behavior I wovld expect from a stvdent at a red brick vniversity -
remember he claimed have spent his time dvring the early to mid 80's in
the Sovth of England - and that's on my tvrf - althovgh I will admit to
being a lot older than him..
He may, of covrse, have gone to a vniversity in the States which wovld
be ovtside my field of experience.
My view abovt his Ph.D. is qvite simple. I think believed he done enovgh
original work to deserve a Ph.D. so he effectively awarded himself one.
He almost admitted as mvch to me in a post he made a few years ago What
he didn't realize were the steps a real academic has to go throvgh to be
awarded svch an honovr. In particvlar the thovght of a peer review on
yovr feet has always scared me witless....

Are yov still playing Civ 3? I've spent so many hovrs playing that
wretched game I've almost worn my movse ovt.

No, it was a great game but I haven't played it in years. I've been playing
RPGs the last few years with strategic breaks for Age of Wonders and
Galactic Civilizations. Right now it is mostly Sacred, both solo and mp
(when the kids or missus is interested). >> Stay informed about: Attention Bill Huffman |

CCU will probably be accredited by DETC within a couple of months. While
DETC is not as good as Regional Accreditation and CCU had to drop their
doctorate programs because DETC can't accredit doctorates, it is still a
real accreditor that's accepted by the Board of Education. In other words,
CCU is one of the very few valid unaccredited schools in existance and they
will soon be accredited. >> Stay informed about: Attention Bill Huffman |

Civ3 - Conquests, the current expansion pack is worth considering,
especially with it patched to v 1.22. It adds fair number of new
features and fixes some MP issues from older versions, apparently. I
haven't played it in MP mode..
My wife and older daughter are not interested in computers, indeed I am
constantly being told off for spending too much time in my office and
not enough with them. I've had a fair few MP games with my younger
daughter (usually TTDx) who sadly is much more interested in boy friends
than spending any time with little old me these days.
I have a pile of unopened games that I haven't had time for so far so I
have banned myself from buying anything new unless it's put through a
proper evaluation procedure first.
