two things that i've noticed that cause a crash (not 100% that is't
the 291) are the si and herbs. it's been a few years since i
experimented with this, but it went something like this:
i would drop some, but not all, of my unidentified strange items.
usually to waldenbrook in the dwarf town. later, i would identify the
strange items in my inventory, causing them to become called si. at
that point if i tried to pick up the old "strange item" the game would
crash.
if i'm remembering correctly:
i could pick up the un-identified version if i didn't have an ID'd
version on me.
I could walk over a pile of multiple items containing an un-ID'd
version with an ID'd version in my inventory, as long as i didn't try
and pick anything up.
I could not walk over a single un-ID'd version with an ID'd version in
my inventory.
I don't recall trying this anywhere but in waldenbrook's shop. I
haven't experimented with the herbs, although i do believe that i've
suffered a crash or two that was caused by the game trying to
reconcile un-identified herbs in a shop with the identified versions
in my inventory.
my personal fix for this was to never sell the si or any herbs until
they'd been identified.
