I hate the way that, in any given game that goes past 10th level, I
have about a 90% chance of getting a 291. Of course, it's possible to
restore from a save, but half the time my last save is from three
levels back, and I have to re-do things I already did--possibly dying
in the process. It's seriously annoying.

Is there a way to fix that annoying Signal 291 bug?

That's a generic crash problem, nothing can be done. If you can find
a more stable version of Adom (e.g. an older version), you can use
that instead.

FYI, if you are killed by that problem, there's much less guilt in
restoring from a deleted character multiple times.

I find Adom winbeta4 to be the most stable version.
When I used the Dos version, it seemed a little more
stable if I started it in full screen mode. I also
noticed increased instability after dropping a very
large pile of items on a dungeon square.

two things that i've noticed that cause a crash (not 100% that is't
the 291) are the si and herbs. it's been a few years since i
experimented with this, but it went something like this:

i would drop some, but not all, of my unidentified strange items.
usually to waldenbrook in the dwarf town. later, i would identify the
strange items in my inventory, causing them to become called si. at
that point if i tried to pick up the old "strange item" the game would
crash.

if i'm remembering correctly:

i could pick up the un-identified version if i didn't have an ID'd
version on me.
I could walk over a pile of multiple items containing an un-ID'd
version with an ID'd version in my inventory, as long as i didn't try
and pick anything up.
I could not walk over a single un-ID'd version with an ID'd version in
my inventory.

I don't recall trying this anywhere but in waldenbrook's shop. I
haven't experimented with the herbs, although i do believe that i've
suffered a crash or two that was caused by the game trying to
reconcile un-identified herbs in a shop with the identified versions
in my inventory.

my personal fix for this was to never sell the si or any herbs until
they'd been identified.
