If I fought a big battle I'm afraid I would end up writing a book. Smile
This does not follow the game exactly just a summary of how bad I lost.

Medusa IV. If ever there was a planet that belonged
in the collective worlds owned by the Orks, this was it. This
heretical thought passed through Captain Antonius's mind and quickly
he quashed it. The space marines were here on business and that
business was death. Spread out before the Captain and his Echo Squad
was a vast plain it rolled downhill from east to west and terminated in
a large swampy jungle in the center of their current patrol. Directly
north across this sloping plain a small mountain penetrated the
horizon, it's jagged peeks like teeth biting into the sky above.
A few hundred meters west of Echo squad, Alpha and Bravo squads took
positions in front of the large jungle, digging in and holding as per
the Captain's orders. Separating these two main battle groups was an
ancient looking ruin. Torn asunder by some unknown force thousands of
years ago, it bore no Ork or Human architecture and appeared barren of
all life. Even the encroaching jungle plants would not take root
there.
Captain Antonius was cocksure. The sensors aboard their Thunderhawk
drop-ship had picked up a small Ork vehicle just the other side of the
jungle, bearing in their direction now. The Captain was so sure this
was going to be a massacre that at first he took movement on the
mountain to be a play of light.
The captain had ordered Echo squad to advance up the plain towards the
mountain, the jungle on their left flank blossoming to life as birds
began to take flight in the distance. Even as the thought had
registered in the Captains mind that this was the vehicle they had
detected driving right through the thick and swampy jungle, another
part of his mind was imagining basking in the glory of his victory.
After all, these were merely Orks, they were no match for the ilk of
the Emperor.
At that moment the world went black for Echo squad. They were
engulfed in a hurricane of lead like none they had ever seen. Shots
were pouring down from the mountain like locusts en route to a fresh
crop.

Alpha and Bravo squads could hear the machine coming fast through the
jungle. What madness would cause one to drive with reckless
abandonment through such difficult terrain was impossible to judge. On
it came, closer and closer. Just as the squads got sight of the
vehicle they heard the loud thuds of the big shoota. A brother went
down in Bravo squad. The wrath from the remaining space marines was
tremendous. Heavy bolter fire wracked the front the of the trukk and
it exploded under the withering onslaught.
Bounding over the edge of the trukk came a large Ork, huge and war
ravaged, surrounded by a bodyguard of Ork's in light armor. This was
the Ork warboss Papa Ugly and he was mad!
Papa Ugly and his bodyguard launched a viscous charge! Only by sheer
luck were they caught up in the tangled underbrush of the jungle and
could not advance.
Meltagunners from Alpha and Bravo squads moved into position and
unleashed the window-maker energies of radioactive death upon the
tangled Orks.

"Bless the Emperor for your power...." The words of Captain
Antonius ceased as he realized all his men were dead. Splatters of
power armor and burnt flesh littered the ground around him. The
mountain ahead of him had come alive with movement. It was covered in
more Orks than he had time to count. They had been outsmarted! The
Emperor's chosen had been outsmarted by a pack of stinking Orks!
This made the Captain irrational with hate and he charged headlong
toward the mountain unleashing the deadly power of his storm bolter as
fast as he could pull the trigger. His sanity completely gone, the
Captain half expected the massing Orks to retreat at his onslaught.
Once his ammo ran dry the captain continued to charge. Oblivious to
the fact his storm bolter had only cut down one Ork. Oblivious to the
fact that the ground was shaking as Ork's stormed down the mountain
in front of him. Oblivious to the fact that the sky had turned dark
around him as a wall of lead engulfed him. Oblivious to the pain of
being rent into mincemeat by hundreds of heavy projectiles. The
laughing God's of Chaos allowed his sanity to return for a split
second as he realized he had fallen into a slump of his own internal
organs. He could hear their laughing as his light flickered out.

Two Orks began to puff up, the intense radiation causing a brief
period of rapid cell growth. Then the heat overcame biology and the
Orks melted away with a hiss of escaping steam. Papa Ugly, shocked and
awed by this display once he had regained his balance, ordered his
troop into a full retreat back into the jungle. The Ork's
disappeared into the green foliage. Alpha and Bravo squad let out a
collective cheer, the Captain would be proud. They had held their
ground and destroyed the Ork vehicle. Mission accomplished. Sergeant
Daniels tried to reach the Captain over the vox-mike in his helmet.
He glanced east along the line of the jungle. Between the jungle and
the ancient ruin a wall of lead approached. The world went dark for
the Space Marines.

Thanks for the compliment. To summarize the pathetic ending of the SM.
Sgt. Daniels got a pistol shot into the approaching Mob and then all
but one private from Bravo squad was dead, my opponent almost literally
could not find enough dice to roll. The private with a meltagun
remained only to turn tail. Per the combat patrol rules we were
playing I had to make a breaking save at the start of my turn. I
rolled an 11! Sad really, game lasted 3.5 turns. I was overconfident
and even let my opponent who I had wasted last week, field a Warboss (3
wounds) even though that is against the combat patrol rules (didn't
really come into play but still...). I was, like my Captain in the
story, thinking I couldn't loose. Lots of mistakes and bad rolls
resulted in a route of my forces. Orks actually won by shooting and
made armor saves!? Go figure.

You say that as if that's a bad thing. And I'd disagree. I think
you've got some nice evocative writing. I particularly like things
like...

I get an instant image like something out of an H.P. Lovecraft
story. It's got a nice 'other worldly' quality without being overly
dramatic or cliche.

Nice name. This part definitely made me smile. Smile

I do have to admit, the ending is a bit unclear (to me) from what you've
got written here. I gather you lost - but it's sort of vague at the
very end.

A quick summary would be handy. And there's nothing wrong with it being
simple. Voltaire is known for his quote - "If you want to be boring,
then leave nothing out." And there's a beauty to that sentiment.

Nice Report - thanks for sharing.

Sorry, I saw them, but they didn't register..... Apparently
my brain was shaken and the machine spirit was driving my head
at the time.
