What is your favorite basing for WWII 15mm mini's. Somehow the
ACW/Napoleonic static grass just doesn't do it for me.

What materials and techniques do you find gives the best result?

I use painted sand & Ground foam from woodland scenics for my personal WWII
15mm armies. I tend to use ground foam rather than static grass on anything
below 28mm, but of course if the customer requests otherwise, they get
whatever they want!

Pictures of the results can be seen in my galleries here:

(and just for the sake of being like a proud father - there's a current army
shot on the workbench here:
http://mercenarybrush.com/workbench.php?id=10&viewimage=2447#m2447 to get
the massed -army effect. )

I'll give it a try.

Is this the best people can do - how about

Assuming the terrain is partly built up to cover any bases (eg with
infantry bases) and your not looking for an answer like go to teh model
railway shop and buy the something there.

Desert : Sawdust, preferably the lighter woods such as Pine, Maple,
Beech. Scattered over a glue and then shadowed with powder paint in
burnt sienna, and highlighted with yellow ochre.
Grass : as Desert but needs painting in of green - often easier if
sawdust is dyed, or stained with thinned paint before applying.
Highlights with yellow and yellow ochre.

Details
Rocks : Chips of cork - basically it breaks up nicely to "rocky"
looking pieces. Colours from black (undercoat), then greys, browns and
yellows depending of region.
Tall grass : paint brush hairs (try the big soft brushes in the general
hardware). Better to get the lighter colours. Also check out the
hairdressers - although they give you a funny look when you ask for off
cuts of blond hair. Need to "drill" a hole and glue tufts very firmly
- usually works better when alongside rocks etc.
Bushes: Get the brown lichen and dip the tips into a wood glue and then
into green sawdust/flocking. Works very well if the sawdust is a dark
green, then the "outer" side of the leaves is highlighted in a lighter
(ie not light) green. Also good for camouflage on vehicles - big tip
to avoid this on sides as the lichen dries out and breaks with clumsy
handling - but on the from and alongside the barrel on a Stug IV or in
front of a Vickers it works great.
