I'll say - I have a hard time making blue decks with complex cards.

But you want this to be basic, right? Plus, counters are archetypal
blue cards. Maybe simply go for Counterspell itself as the simplest of
its kind?
Also, counters are kinda meanish. I put in some

I would suggest maybe Phantom Warrior in there somewhere - "you can't
block this" is as simple as they come. Invisibility's not much use in a
deck with mostly flyers, though. And not that it makes a difference,
why Wandering Ones rather than the core set's Fugitive Wizard? How
about Wind Drake to showcase blue's flyer efficiency? A problem I see
with Sage Owl is - will the kids understand why this is a valuable
ability? I'd include it, but maybe not a full foursome. How about this:
17 Island
2 Grayscaled Gharial (Ravnica)
2 Manta Riders (Tempest)
3 Phantom Warrior (9th)
4 Wind Drake (9th)
4 Counterspell (Take your pick)
2 Cephalid Looter (?)
2 Air Elemental (9th)
1 Archivist (9th)
1 Mahamoti Djinn (9th)
1 Tidal Kraken (9th)
1 Sea's Claim
This gives a fair bit of evasion of various sorts, showcasing pretty
much all of blue's abilities in the area; you've got the card draw and
counters, Sea's Claim/Gharial introduces the kids to using combos in
one of the simplest ways possible, and blue is of course the combo
colour. Kids love big vanilla things and the Kraken can't be blocked as
a nice bonus, so that nicely showcases blue's penchant for big
overpriced beasties.
