PRESS RELEASE
Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History
Xbox 360 consoles and games sell at record levels; outsells
PlayStation 3 by three-to-one ratio.
REDMOND, Wash., Dec 01, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked
off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the
biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported
Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to
beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one
ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday
sales figures from 2007.
Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360,
with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles,
such as "Gears of War 2," "Fable II," and "Lips." Xbox 360 continues
to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per
console.
"We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism,
knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social
entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don
Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment
Business at Microsoft. "Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled
with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online
community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the
groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."
Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price
drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe.
Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales
nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this
generation.
With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide
(estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more
broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently
launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and
inviting everyone to play.

Serious question:
Is it really meaningful to include the Wii in a comparison with the
PS3 and the 360 when neither of those systems competes for the same
market as the Wii? >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

--------------------------------------------------------------
The only people who don't consider the Wii in the same category as the PS3
and 360 are people who want to kid themselves about how dominant the Wii is
this generation. Why would it not be in the same category? No Hi-Def?
What does that have to do with anything? The Wii was released AFTER the
360. The Wii is Nintendo's offering this generation just as the GC was last
gen. Is it because the Wii has a broader audience than any other console?
There is no logical reason to not include the Wii. >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

Should we never compare sales of compact cars with sports cars with
mini-vans with SUVs because they target different drivers? Is it
meaningless to talk about how sales of SUVs are dwindling while sales
of hybrid sedans are on the rise?
The Wii is a video game console just like the Xbox 360 and the
Playstation 3. When a consumer walks into a video game store or the
video game department of a retailer, they see the Wii hardware and
software right next to the 360 and PS3 hardware and software.
Those in the video game industry consider the Wii competition for the
Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Market analysts consider the Wii
competition. Consumers consider the Wii competition. Microsoft and
Sony do as well but have simply given up hopes of competing and turned
their focus on each other.
There is no good reason to NOT include the Wii in sales comparisons
unless you're specifically discussing who is going to win second place. >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

Considering that most so-called financial analysts only care "who's #1",
such a comparison between all consoles would be of interest to them.
However, if we look at the Wii's history of outselling the PS3 and 360
COMBINED by more than 2 to 1, then we can extrapolate that the Wii outsold
the 360 by at least 2 to 1...assuming there were actually that many Wii's
available. Otherwise, the best answer for "how many Wii's did they sell?"
is "All of them."

The Wii is rocking the sales figures in terms of software but still
doesn’t compare to the Xbox 360. Microsoft pulls out 93-million units
while Nintendo takes home a modest 73-million units in software…
I wonder if Halo3 ,Gears2,COD4,Mass Effect, Bioshock,or some other AAA
titles was bundled with the 360 what kind sales they would have? >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

um, Gears 2 IS bundled with the 360 at the minute, at least it
certainly is here in the UK, and so was Halo3 when it was released.
official bundles, i mean, not just ones shops put together themselves. >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

What exactly are these numbers supposed to represent?
The Wii currently stands at about 194 million software units compared
to the 360's 174 million. Even ignoring the 32 million units of Wii
Sports that were bundled with North American and PAL consoles, that's
still 162 million units sold - only 12 million behind the 360 with a
full year less to do that selling. Factor in all the Forza and Marvel
Ultimate Alliance units that were bundled in with the Xbox 360 during
last holiday season since those were counted and the number's even
closer.

Microsoft is bundling two games this year again. That's two holiday
seasons in a row now. All these bundled games are going to count just
like they already have. I'm sure other countries have their own
official bundles as well.
If Halo 3, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, or any of the other games had
been bundled in, I doubt the numbers would change that much. Those
games would likely have been purchased regardless and any big spikes
in hardware sales due to the release of those games would have simply
replaced the non-bundled sales we already saw. >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are tons more 360 titles than Wii titles. In most games stores, the
number of 360 offerings almost surpasses those of the Wii and PS3 combined
if we are talking about only North American releases.
There was a Halo 3 pack because a couple of people in here picked one up.
There was a Gears bundle at Costco or Sam's this year because someone here
hooked us up with the link. Last time I checked, the current 360 in the US
is the only system that DOES come bundled with an actual retail game(s) as a
standard. PS3 has that Uncharted bundle but that is not standard. Every
360 (even the lame Arcade) comes with games and I bet those numbers count
for their sales. If people whine about Wii Sports counting because people
are buying it just for the controller, shouldn't they be equally bothered
that Lego Indiana Jones AND Kung Fu Panda count as software sales under the
same formula? >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |

What exactly is a "proper games console" and who decided on the
definition?
The Wii uses a modified version of the GameCube architecture that
gives it nearly twice the "power" of the GameCube and allows it to
play all GameCube games and even use GameCube controllers and memory
cards. The GameCube was more powerful than the Playstation 2.
If what you say is true, the Playstation 2 is not and never was a
"proper games console."
Try again. >> Stay informed about: BLACK FRIDAY - Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3-to-1 |
