BG2 SoA HELP! w/ re-install on XP

After much stress of trying to get an area to load. I must admit defeat. I
have tried the official patch and clearing my cache and Temp files. I must
re-install the game. I am hoping this will reload whatever area is clearly
missing for me to move forward. (Basically when I try to enter the Drow city
from the underdark the game stops at the "load screen")

So . . . Can I re-install the game and save all of my characters and the
"saves" and restart right where I left off? Do I need to backup the BG2 files
first. Does anyone have a better idea? Untill now not one problem has arisen
with the game.

If you ddin't add any mods you should be able to save the save
directory, drop it back in and they will work, as long as there isn't
any corruption in the save games themselves.
If you did add mods you must add them in the exact same order as last time.
