Hello. Once returned to Baldur's Gate after visiting Candlekeep I can go
nowhere without being arrested by the Flaming Fist. For instance, I want to
go into the Sorcerous Sundries to buy some stuff but when getting in or out
I'm being arrested, no matter which side I come from. Is there any way to
avoid this? David

Being accosted by the Flaming Fist is part of the game. When they talk to
you, say that Scar is their proper superior, then say that you'll have to
fight them, even though it means losing your reputation. But when they turn
hostile, don't kill them. They appear to be particularly susceptible to
wands of paralyzation, so paralyze them and then walk away until they can't
see you anymore. Alternatively, you can cast Hold Person, Entangle, or Web
on them (taking care that your own party doesn't also get entangled or
caught in the web), then walk away.

At that stage of the game, I find it useful to do most of my walking around
in the sewers, only popping up near whatever destination I need to be (e.g.,
the Flaming Fist compound, the Harbormaster, or the Ducal Palace).

Duck into the nearest building and/or sewer. One member of
your party can peek out of a building to see if the FF is
still near (a thief with Boots of Speed is ideal for that).

Traveling via sewers is a bit more complicated (and dangerous)
but once you get used to it, sewers are the way to go.

It's tedious but it can be done.

That'll work, provided you do it *before* they talk to you. In the case that
the OP mentioned, where they're waiting outside the magic shop, there's no
good way of avoiding them. The cops can loiter in that vicinity for a long
time, while your party complains because you're standing around doing
nothing.

Once they're hostile, they'll actually chase you into the sewers. (Surprised
me, because I didn't think they'd cross an "autosave" boundary.)

Once they've talked to you, you can agree to be arrested, and then
bust out of BG city jail. From then on, guards will attack you on
sight, but you never have to fight or injure them, only run away. In
fact you can even have a character with boots of speed get the Fist to
chase him, lead them out of your way, then have him run away from them
until they cannot see him to follow any more. The rest of your group
can then go where they damn well like.

Jonathan.
