Hi,
got the game today and it looks nice.

However as soon as there is action on the screen (vehicles in motion,
bullets flying) it get's unplayably jerky.

Sure, my machine is not the newest, a 3.1GHz P4 HAT with 1GB RAM and a
256MB Radeon 9800 PRO.

But I play Half Life 2 at 1600x1200 with full effects without problems.

On ArmA I am now down to 1024x768 and lowest viewing distance. Still, as
soon as there is action it get's unplayable.

Any tipps?

Hoss

OK, Patch 1.01 is out and I installed it. The game runs much smoother
now and 1152 resolution runs good, with all graphic settings on low
ofcourse.
I am just finding my way around the game, gameplay is very consistant to
OFP.
One thing that is very annoying are the long loading times, even when
you switch back from map view you get a "LOADING" screen - ARGH!

I am really starting to have fun.
ArmA plays exactly like OFP, looks much better, has more options...and
still some of the same old bugs.

Whatever.

Here are two screens I just took, a nice sunset over the extraction
point and a stealth mission at night in the rain.

I can't wait to play online with you guys!

Sorry, I forgot to post the hints for making the game run nice and fast.

1) Apply the 1.01 patch
2) If you still have graphics performance problems turn off shadows. You
won't miss them and it speeds things up enormously.
3) If you have sound problems (the old OFP bug that tanks and other
vehicles sound way too close) turn off EAX.

All together ArmA 1.01 runs way better and has less bugs than OFP 1.0!

I'm hooked!
Some missions are really, really hard but you can safe as often as you
want.
I guess the mission designers expected that the game will appeal to OFP
veterans and the going get's tough right away.

And the chopper again is a bitch to fly, especially if you are alone and
don't have a gunner.

A new command view screenshot from a cool tank mission I just finished
(I just finished all single missions and will continue with the campaign
in the next days).

I've always wondered,is this one of those games,OPFP and AA that would
technically require technology not on the general computer market to
run the game at maxed out settings on everything? even when I saw the
screenshot of AA they had the video settings open in the jepeg and it
appeared even the developers had the terrain detail set to low and
other things.

back when my computer was top of the line around 6 years ago, OPFP had
been out a while and it seemed even back then if I maxed it out, the
game was like a slide show.

There is a big drawback to the AA engine Sad
While the game needs TOP OF THE LINE iron of today, the code it at the
state of yesterday. ArmA is NOT (I repeat NOT) multithreading. It does
not make use of dual processors, hyperthreading processors or the new
core duo features. It is a plain old single processor code.

So I guess the cheapest machine to run it great would be a fast Celeron
with the best graphics card you can buy.

I very much doubt that. And I'm sure it will support multi cpus in
future.....
