I was one of the first DSL customers... they have always charged me $39.95
per month for my advertised speed of 1.5 Mbps. Today's speed test shows
I'm getting 951 Kbps download and 620 Kbps upload.
I've known there were much faster options with cable but I wasn't willing
to disturb my life by getting a new ISP so I lived with it.
Then recently I discovered DSL can hit speeds of 6.0 Mbps and that my ISP
only charges $29.95 for 1.5 Mbps service. So basically, I've been getting
ripped off for $20 per month because I wasn't paying attention.
I simply called and upgraded to my account to 6.0 Mbps service which is
$39.95 (exactly what I'm paying)... and they sent me a new modem. They
say they'll upgrade the line by the end of business today.

So, what's your speed and how much are you paying?

I am away and can't measure my speed right now, but know I hit the
advertised pretty regular, on Comcast.
8.0 MBps, 764 KBps upload. I really don't know exactly what I pay, as it is
included in my digital package including hdtv, certainly not cheap as a
whole.

Update:
1 hour till end of business day.
Speed still about 1.0 Mbps.
Business as usual... the more you want something the more likely it'll get
screwed up.

Yeee Haaaaw, I reckon. That is a great jump in speed for the price.
I have cable with Charter.net. 5megs d/l @ approx $54.00 per month I
believe.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/274284527.png
My Speed runs pretty close to advertised. They offer a 10 meg package, but
I can't see that it would
improve my life at all.
I fly lots in multiplayer mode with my flying club and have no issues.

I'm on British Telecom's "up to 8Mbps" service which costs £14.99 per month
(about $30) and what you actually get depends on your distance from the
exchange. I'm about 3 miles away and get 3Mbps.

I'm with Tiscali and whilst there is slowdown in traffic during the
evening (peak times) late on through to mid afternoon it's very fast.
I have an 8Mbps connection for £17.99 including unlimited FREE
phonecalls to landlines anytime of the day or week. There is also no
download limit either )

Hi Steve, as your quoting in sterling is this a UK based ISP?
Surely those speeds are cable? Good price including line
Do you have any download limits with a cheap rate like that?

ADSL maximum speeds depend a lot on where you are in relation to your central
(telephone) office. The closer you are, the higher the maximum speed. I'm
right across the street from my central office, so I can easily get 7+ Mbps,
and the modem itself will go to 8.0 Mbps (if I were to upgrade to an ADSL2
modem, I could conceivably at least double that).
ADSL tends to provide lower maximum speeds than cable, but higher average
speeds, since you aren't sharing as much hardware with other subscribers using
ADSL as you are with cable.
Unfortunately I still have only 570 KBps or so on the uplink. >> Stay informed about: Anxiously waiting for 6.0 Mbps today |

can't give it to me in my area! Doh!
You yanks have internet so cheap compared to us down here. lol.

I miss the good ole days of Gigabit downloads via Napster.
Damn those were fast times! When broadband networks were still pretty much
