Post subject: [Announce] POWDER 100 Released
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>announce, others (more info?)

Hi,

I am pleased to make a general announcement about a new version of the
roguelike POWDER.

POWDER has been designed from the ground up for play on the Gameboy
Advance handheld console. It has since been ported to the Nintendo DS
where it supports full stylus controls. While those are still the
ideal platform, SDL ports to Windows, Linux and Mac allow people on
those platforms to use their full keyboard and/or mouse in a
traditional roguelike manner.

The design goals in POWDER are:

Fast Gameplay
A session should be quick to start up. One should be able to
accomplish a lot in a short play time. This has resulted in a
focus on hack and slash. There are also no character creation
choices - relevant choices are only needed if the character lives
long enough. This has also kept the play quite linear: the player
always has an obvious next target.

Complicated Interactions
Different items in the world should interact in expected fashions.
The goal is to allow the player to find different solutions to
problems depending on their current equipment.

Ergonomically Friendly
Because the target platform is the Gameboy Advance which is rather
limited in control interfaces, it is important to maximize those
that are present. POWDER thus supports remappable buttons,
context sensitive menus, and extensive "Do what I mean" built into
the movement system.

The Windows, Linux and Mac ports are able to bypass the context
sensitive menus by directly pressing the correct key. (ie: 'r'
when the cursor is on a book will read the book)

The NDS and PC versions can be played entirely with the stylus
and sport a remappable actionbar which allows common commands
to be assigned to buttons around the sides of the screen.

Replayability via a Changing World
Like most roguelikes, POWDER aims to provide a new play experience
in every adventure by randomizing most of the world creation.

It is a full-graphic roguelike with 16x16 tiles and no character mode
option. There are, however, several different tilesets to chose from,
including on where the monsters are all stylized ASCII characters.

The release of POWDER 100 marks five years of development.

You may find the latest version of POWDER and ongoing news of its
development at:

Thank you for your time,
Jeff Lait

I've started playing Powder on my GBA and now I take it everywhere in
my NDS and play the windows port at work.

I know its features and they make Powder the most enjoyable roguelike
out there for me.

> The release of POWDER 100 marks five years of development.

The first release i played was 070 and the game has improved a lot.
The new tileset just makes it look as good as its awesome gameplay
deserves.

Come on, any of you, roguelike lovers that have not played powder yet,
make yourself a favor and download it now.

No Jeff, thank you for sharing your work with us. Powder will always
be in my top favourite games of all time.

Congratulations on making it to 100!

Five years? When you think of that, does it make you feel old?

I'll check it out as soon as I have some time.

Yeah, this is particularly evil. I've not had a chance to properly
balance soul suckers because there attack has been nerfed for so
long. Having just lost a promising character due to amnesia (ended up
being stoned - the amnesia apparently extended to the player), I think
the amnesia time is way too long. Specifically, I think that after
you kill the soul sucker the amnesia length should be capped to some
short length of time. This will keep them as dangerous opponents, but
not the sort of "Nuke Everything Now!!!" creatures that they are now.

Or the amnesia could be long, but affect only a subset of skills. Frankly
I wondered why it wasn't the kiss of death for spellcasters as it was...

Wow. I just downloaded it and ran it, and it looks amazing! The
interface, with mouse capability, and drag and drop for inventory
slots? Wow.

Congratulations, this looks like a lot of fun.

Its slightly Final Fantasyish in appearance, which is friendly and
familiar. But to couple that with a roguelike concept? Well,
bravo.

This will be the first tiled roguelike that I will play.

Thanks!

Thank you! A lot of thanks goes to the players as well, however.
Drag and drop is actually Richard Quirk who kicked in the initial code
that got me moving in that direction.

And the tiles were designed by Akoi Meexx quite recently.

Aha! Converting people to graphics one roguelike at a time :> Now I
just need to get David Damerell to use his mouse and my take over is
complete!

I'm giving POWDER a go for the first time (Windows version for now,
can't figure out how to get it working on my DS), and I'm enjoying it.
I do think things could be made a bit clearer for people translating
from other Roguelikes, though. Perhaps it's my tendency to skim
through the instructions and tutorial, but I can't find a way to list
my intrinsics (I eat corpses and seem to gain them, but then they
disappear?), or a list of what items I've 'identified'.

It is good fun though. I seem to be having luck (though I can't really
say) - I've found a crown of warning, an amulet of life saving, speed
(and jump, but I'm wearing speed) boots, a ring of cold resistance,
and an (artifact ?) shield (that I can't equip because I'm wearing a
cursed kite shield). Could be standard fare, of course, but it all
sounds impressive. Will perservere (and likely die). Attempting
atheist conduct after someone said it was a challenge.

Five minutes later...

What kind of damned artifact shield sticks to my hand and makes me
bleed? Grumble grumble.

Ah, I really like this. Though, last question - Why am I told that I
start to wonder about the existence of Gods when I cast a magic
missile?

A common problem, but it is really hard to solve without making it
exactly like the other roguelikes, which kind of defeats the point of
having a separate game :>

Like Nethack, this is only available in-game via magic or magical
effects.

> (I eat corpses and seem to gain them, but then they

Sadly, there is no equivalent to Nethack's \ command.

POWDER is a lot shorter than Nethack - the 25 vs 50 levels is the
first real clue. As such, the cool items come sooner and faster.

> Attempting
> atheist conduct after someone said it was a challenge.

Atheist is a challenge as the gods can be quite useful in POWDER.
However, one risk is that many find the multiple deities one of the
unique flavours of POWDER. Unlike Crawl, all of them are active at
once and you are expected to switch allegiances on level up.

The same RNG that thought an evil silver circlet that granted stone
resist, vulnerable to silver, blind, and strangled was a good idea :>

H'ruth, the barbarian god, is getting pissed at you. However, being
an atheist, you merely get uneasy feelings rather than flame strikes.

Sorry for the extra post, but I forgot to respond to this issue.
POWDER is, in someways, my vision of Nethack done right. One thing I
hate in Nethack is that rings of [edible intrinsic] are useless. This
is also why the dragonmail choice ends up being a simple grey/silver
choice. My solution in POWDER is to make all edible intrinsics
temporary. I think some old fork tried this, but included a way to
double-eat to make permanent. No such option exists in POWDER. They
stack, but remain temporary.

It's a neat idea. I especially like how there's a risk of gaining
'vulnerability to cold/fire' as well as resistance to the opposing
element.

Thanks for answering all my questions. I'm taking a break (after
playing for hours) for now. Just killed a scary-looking 'Cretan
Minotaur' (had to polymorph into a hill-orc to do it) and am now in
possession of a nifty corpse of aforementioned and a 'y' rune. I'll
check them out tomorrow.
