Yes, over not into the lava, yes, yes, and unique magic bow and mace.
Basically, when you have entered the oblivion gate turn right and head
as far as you can crossing the lava in the process (there are a couple
of ways across). If you find some exploding mines you are heading in the
right general direction. At the farthest tip of the island turn around
and look for a door (that does not appear on your map) and work your way
through the tunnels (Fume Vaults). You will eventually reach the leaning
sigil tower that was behind you when you entered the gate. There are 2
powerful guardians called Hate Keepers and you'll need the keys that
they carry to access the loot.

Neither
Spend as little time in lava as possible. No matter what you do, a few
seconds will kill you.

You should be able to find a way to jump across, via various broken
bridges or collapsed buildings, so no need to actually walk across the
lava.

Sorry for the delay in thanking you for the tips on the Easter Egg
Tower. Today I had a little breather to read the responses.
Thank you all for the information. I will definitely try this. BTW,
are the Hate Keepers tough to kill? >> Stay informed about: Allies for Bruma - Chorrol Oblivion Gate |

I think they're levelled, but should be easy enough to kill, you face
them individually with no other enemies nearby. I've done it at level 5
and level 20+ with different characters (mage and long range assassin,
not tried melee on them yet).
