Does the airforce base actually do anything other than take up space? There
are no missions i can do for it either, and i have had no 'spectacular
airshows' that it says it provides. Can/do you get Area 51 form the base?

You can do tank missions from the base. It also brings in §300/month IIRC.
But it doesn't give you area 51, to get that you have to have a badly
failing city, and do several of Dr. Vu's missions.

Strange, my Airforce base doesnt give me any income. It is just simply
taking up space. But i did notice the demand ofr $$$ jobs rise, so it's not
all that bad.
