Well I thought my PC gaming days were over, especially since I have a
1 year old son now. But I do find myself having some spare time in the
evenings.

The Age of Conan forums are now locked down allowing only those that
bought the game to enter, so I can't get a true pulse on the game.

I'm watching trailers and movies and I'm very, very enticed especially
since I have a $50 gift cert from my bday burning a hole in my pocket.

What say ye? Anyone buy it and playing it? I'm not interested in
comparing it to WOW. I'd also like to here about immersion factor.

I started playing it yesterday. I like it, but then again, I've liked
almost all MMOs on day 1. It's later on, when the grind gets going,
that I realize if I really like them or not.
So far for me, it's been basically a WoW with much better graphics and
more scantily clad women, but of course, I'm still in the 'beginners'
island, and will be for a while considering all the unfinished quests
I still have to do lol. Obviously haven't seen or experienced any of
the PvP/RVR features like guild cities, sieges, etc. so I can't tell.
So far I'm still doing the standard 'go and kill this' and 'go and
fetch X of this'. But it's fun. I'm a caster so not really
experiencing the combat system, to me as a caster, it's pretty much
the same as every other MMO I've played (since I've played caster in
all of them), but for more 'melee' oriented people, it might be more
fun than other games before.

How do you like the caster spells and effects? And do you find playing
a caster in AoC any harder than a caster in WoW? Can you only wear
cloth in AoC ?

Turk, you said the cities are unsafe. Does that mean on a PVP server
you can get attacked? Or do you mean cities are home to NPC's that
will attack you at night in dark allies?

I like the day/night cycle effect, sounds cool !

And as far as the combos how do you like it and how are the finishing
moves?

I've been in since the early entry, and I'm enjoying it so far. The
graphics are solid, if not spectacular. I like the combat, which is more
action oriented than most MMOs. It's mainly button mashing, which leads to
combos, but it's more involving than the average game. One really novel
thing is the day/night cycle. You can actually sleep until night time and
play in a dark city while others are playing in the same city in the day
time. Also, cities are not safe havens like in most MMOs. You can be
attacked by unscrupulous characters, expecially in back allies. Another
advantage is the setting, which is much more "low" fantasy. So far, the
only fantastical creature I've fought is a demon. It's a nice switch from
WoW and GW.

I'm going to stick with it a while.

Mind you, I only just reached level 9/80 which gives me a whooping...
1 attack spell, 1 healing and 1 buff (I'm a healer/mage kinda thing, I
think it's called a Tempest of Set). The healing spell is not really a
heal, it's just a minor HoT, but the lightning is solid so I'm ok
fighting most stuff around my level (up to 2 above, 3 levels above
laugh at me), although I saw some level 17 or 18 dude take on like 4
level 19s on his own (2 of them minions), think he was a conqueror or
something, so guess he was overpowered Smile ( to me, I'm balanced, able
to take on stuff around my level and just a tad higher, at most 2 at a
time). But again... too early to tell.
Casting is about the same as other games, stand as far as you can to
cast your spell, blast a couple of times and finish with your weapon
if mob is near death, or keep casting but with chances of getting
interrupted.
The only thing I haven't liked so far, for you to be a crafter you
need to be an adventurer and reach a certain level. I like crafting
from the beginning, but that's a minor thing.
Another minor thing I didn't like, as far as I can tell there's only
one beginner area, so if you create an alt, you'll need to do the same
quests (unlike WoW which had a different area for each race almost).
It hit me when, as a priest of Set, I'm supposed to revere snakes, but
some of the quests asked me to kill them! If I could roleplay I would
have blasted the NPC for blasphemy! (and probably die in the process).

I'm talking about the NPCs. I'm not saying you'll get attacked everywhere,
but take a few off the beaten path alleys and you may run into some hosyile
characters.

I like it. Gives it a little depth beyond the mindless clicking. It's
still pretty mindless, but you click more than one key and try to string
moves together. I still haven't gotten the combos down, yet, it's mostly
random to me, but I'm trying to pinpoint which key combos do what.
Basically, the 1 key is a left swing, 2 key is a downward swing, and 3 is a
right swing, so there is a little internal logic to it. There are still
standard special moves that you can click in your interface, as well.

To me the immersion factor is just fine... that of course, after I
removed the OOC channel from my chatbox Smile Although I'm not very
versed in the world of Hybernia (think that's what's called), I did
feel at ease in the world, and the newbie island quickly teaches you
that the world is the type of 'survival of the fittest'. Everybody
taking advantage of everybody pretty much Smile

Is the UI customizable ala WOW? I got spoiled by the WOW UI and being
able to change it exactly the way I want. I find it hard to play RPGs
or MMOs that I can't customize now.

I'm not going to be playing the game. I was in for a bit at the end of
closed beta and that was enough. Graphically it is outstanding. The big
cities are treats for the eyes. The artists and modellers did a bang up job.

Gameplay however is lacking. Character customization is minimal compared to
other games-City of Heroes and Guild Wars are just two examples of how to do
it right (I like the idea of a huge but limited active skill set). After
getting to 40 on a demonologist I realized there was just no joy in playing
anymore - downright boring to be exact.

My opinion could be completely changed on a fully levelled character, but
the levelling up part of an MMO should be a fun and addictive experience.

I am having fun with this. I picked a Guardian, who is a melee specialist,
with no magic to worry about. The combat system takes a bit of getting used
to, but the only other MMO I play is Tabula Rasa, which I enjoy, and I
believe that it is also wildly different from the likes of WOW when it comes
to combat. I'm a fan of the Conan books, so this game suits me fine. I
bought the early access and its been pretty good. I was impressed with the
graphics and the sound, and I ordered the collectors box, got home from work
and behold, my drinking cape key has been sent to me, so I'm off for free
beer forever at the pub!
